What Records Comp. E.P. 7″

I really wish I could remember where I got this from. It was when I entered the eBay madness that I realised I had a gem laying around that I hadn’t payed much attention to mainly cause it didn’t had a sleeve. It was re-issued some years ago. What Records was also responsible for releases by The Germs and The Dils. Three classic LA bands with three great tunes. Here’s what Johnny Stingray(who later went on to KAOS) had to say in an interview done in 2001: “- What’s your favourite Controllers song? - My fave controllers song will always be ‘Neutron Bomb’. It was my first song and when I listen to it today, I still love that stupid intro. And my guitar solo kicks!“.

any relations to the Weirdos song? it dosen’t sound the same. great songs anyway.

Two different songs however there is a relation. Skulls wrote their song before the Weirdos, but the Weirdos recorded theirs first. Hence, the parenthetical “The Original” claiming bragging rights.

I found this in a used bin for ten cents in 1983! I never even knew it existed before then. Classic indeed.

I have the What Records? comp album “What Is It?” that I’m now ready to part with after 25 years. With Germs, Kaos, Dils, Skulls, Controllers, Eyes and Kaos. 10 tracks in all.
Anyone know anything about it?
Near mint condition so it should be worth a dollar or two by now.
Try searching for the words what, is and it on the internet. no fun!

The version of “Neutron Bomb” by the Controllers is a completely different song than the Weirdos. The Controllers were singing their “Neutron Bomb” first, but the Weirdos came up with a song called that too thus the “Original” slapped onto the title. The intro to “Neutron Bomb” is lifted word by word from a famous poem by Randall Jarrell called “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner”. Most college English majors in the U.S. are forced to read the poem at some point. The version of “Neutron Bomb” on this What? sampler is actually a different version than the one that appeared on their What? Records single. Both of these versions are different than the one that we released on the recent Controllers CD “Another Sunny Day” which has their original 1977 demo with yet another version. The Controllers still play the occasional show to this day.

I have always enjoyed this version of the Controllers classic tune. I was lucky to have found this record in a 25 cent bin in 1982…I looked for years before that and could not find a copy. Thanks for the info Artifix Greg. Kaos were better than the Controllers to me. RIP Amy

Maybe I didn’t find it, but my mom gave it to me for a Christmas present, because she was in love with Stingray??? Who fucking cares? Not me.

Sorry to keep jamming up this page…but, I finally remembered where I got the record. I was in Boulder Colorado scoring some killer drugs in 1998, and came upon a garage sale. Lo and behold, I spotted this baby, sitting there, with a price tag of 17 cents. That is my story and I am sticking to it.
