Master Tape Vol. II Comp. 2xLP 12″

Monday, July 24th, 2006

mastertape_vol2_front.jpgOne of my favourite US HC compilations along with the first Master Tape volume. This is a massive download with loads of great bands. My picks: Malignant Growth, Idiot Savants, Sand In The Face, Sacred Order, No Labels, Front Line, Repellents, Mecht Mensch, Zero Boys, Delinquents, Tar Babies, Wasted Talent, Anti-Bodies.

MRR: How did you find the bands on “The Master Tape Vol. II”?
PAUL: Inside Master Tape I there was a poster, and on one section of that poster was a paragraph that asked any interested bands to send a tape to us for consideration. Then I just took what I felt to be the best stuff. One thing I would like to point out is that these compilations are nothing more than a chance for any band that wouldn’t normally have a chance to be on record. It’s not really limited to hardcore. I’m sure a lot of people will wonder why some of the bands are on the second one. It’s because they are bands that have been working with very little reward for a long time, and they deserve the break more than anyone else.
“. Enjoy this classic!

Starshooter - Pin Up Blonde 7″

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

starshooter.jpgThey where from France. They played punk. One of their 7inches went number 1 on the French top chart. They probably ate frogs and visited the Eiffel Tower.

Unter den Linden - Motstand i lader E.P. 7″

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

unter_mostand.jpgOne of the best swedish HC bands ever. Way underrated or maybe just forgotten because they refused to wear the punk “uniform”? Their mix of dark gloomy punk(Motstand i lader) and straightforward HC(Fat Boys and Little Boys) with clever lyrics make them one of Swedens most unique punk bands. For those of you who appreciate Missbrukarna and other high quality swedish HC/Punk Rock. This is their second 7inch.

Toys - Go To The Police 7″

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

toys_police.jpgThe UK release came without a sleeve. The German and this French pressing had different sleeves. Enough geeky info and over to what this post is all about: two killer(how many times is that word used in here?) punk/powerpop tracks. If these tracks dosen’t make you shake some ass then go check your head(or maybe your ass in case you got something up there that shouldn’t be there).
Country: UK
Year: 1980
Label: Red Bus/Red Melody/Carrere

The Trainspotters - High Rise 7″

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

trainspotters_high_rise.jpgMike Read a DJ at BBCs Radio 1 is the genious behind one of my top 10 songs from 1979: High Rise. So catchy it hurts. The b-side is not catchy at all. Stay tuned for their second 7inch to be posted. “In 1979, recording as The Trainspotters, Read released “High Rise”, a single based on his Mike Read, Mike Read, 275 & 285, Mike Read, Mike Read, National-Radio-1 radio show jingle.

The Stingrays - Coundown E.P. 7″

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

stingrays.jpgTwo killer punk/powerpop tracks(Countdown and Action) and one decent 60’s influenced pop song which is out of the scoop of this site to be included. On the Fried Egg label that also released an awesome 7inch by The Fans. “I loved the Stingrays. When they played with us (which they often did at venues as diverse as The Stonehouse and Trinity Church) I usually enjoyed their set more than ours.

The Neat - Hormones In Action 7″

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

neat_hormones.jpgneat_hormones_group.jpg

There’s way too little powerpop posts in here so to fill up the quota we give you this awesome classic. Take a close look at the band photo here. Ray Romance the guitarist to the right must’ve gotten himself laid a couple of times looking so cool and wearing those tight leopard pants. The b-side is up to others to post cause it’s just nowhere near the a-side.

Country: UK
Year: 1980
Label: Neat Beat

The Flyboys - Jetsetter E.P. 7″

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

flyboys_jetsetter.jpgNot the Flyboys from California. This is the Minnesota powerpop band with the same name. Jetsetter is a classic powerpop song that deserves to be comped. The b-side has the country flavoured Cruel World and a cover of one of the worst rock n roll songs ever Hippy, Hippy, Shake. The only thing I’ve found is their inclusion in Felix Havocs Minnesota Punk Rock Discography.

Country: USA
Year: 1980
Label: Fliez

Raw Deal! Comp. LP 12″

rawdeal.jpgThe first and classic compilation released by Lee Woods RAW Records. Contrary to what you might believe there aren’t too many great tracks on it. You get the top of the cream and if you crawe it all then check out Damage Goods Records reissue of this.

Check out a very interesting interview with Lee over at punk77.co.uk: “I loved to help bands, so just about every Sunday I had a band in Spaceward studio. When it became clear we couldn’t release them all I had the idea for the Raw Deal album.“. Best track: Psycho’s Soul Train.

From the back of the sleeve: “Dedicated to all small labels, who are in it for the fun and glory-not just for the money.”.
