Got some new stuff to catch up on. First out is Sweet Rot. Pure low fi, sloppy instrumentation and obnoxious vocals. File under bands who-can-hardly-play-but-got-the-right-attitude. The thing I like most is the dark background vocals which give Sweet Rot a touch of originality. The somewhat typical chorus in the other wise great Wouldn’t You Like Too Know is saved by this spooky, dark and hilarious back up singing.

As a whole this is a great great record but after some spins I know what’s wrong. The songs are a bit too long. Cut out a verse and a chorus and they’re there.

Ugly sleeve but a nice looking through foil printed insert! I bet people who enjoyed the Boys Club 7″ will dig this too. Higly recommended!

Get it from Square Wave Records.

Ouch. This was the kind of mediorce band that I would have thrown ice cubes ( or pennies if they did’nt get the point )at years ago just to get them off the stage. I KNEW this day would come, just as there was generic HC now we have come full circle with gerneric lo-fi. Greg Lowery is rolling in his grave ( or soon will be if he hears this clunker ).

    Who is Greg Lowery?

  3. rich says:

greg lowery-rip offs, zodiac killers, rip off records CEO..

  4. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Ok, never been into the Rip Off stuff since I’ve found it, believe it or not, a bit too generic ha ha ha. But give me a hint of what bands to seek out on the label and I might change my mind.

Did Greg Lowery die? it’s SUPERCHARGER and the Radio X records that are the real winners from that scene, in my book anyway. And didn’t the FINGERS find their way onto this blog in a youtube video – members went on to be in the rip-offs.

  6. MrMike says:

Well, where to start? As for Rip Off Records you might as well start with the singles comps.
Gregory is alive & well in Alameda, CA USA. For sort of a “history written by the victors” you should start with the liner notes for the Rip Offs CD. It’s total nonsense in my opinion, but sooner or later a DVD will come out featuring the RO’s that should right the ship (if you will).
I’m sitting on hours of that stuff & just need to get with the band members-which is going to be a chore.

    Must have Rip Off singles
    Teengenerate “pushin me around”
The Brides “Her comes the Brides”
The Rip Offs- all three 7″s are winners.

The rest is hit and miss but the above mentioned records fuking rule!!! as for the Fingers Shane White was also in the Rip Offs the infections and the Loose Lips.

kids naming bands after Hubble Bubble songs is cool, even if you dont like the record/

Sometimes three chords is enough, sometimes it ain’t. Also if you’re only going to play three chords that gives you extra incentive to make your songs SHORT.I count forty two seconds that could of better been used by silence. Two minutes is about the maximum amount of time I can listen to the same three chords in the same order over and over again.
