Two absolutely awesome tracks: Life Is Cheap which kills and Expectations who destroys. Why did Teenage Popeye have to ruin it with the two other completely shit tracks: Peter Principal = worthless cock rock without the big dick just a moist little penis and She’s Only 16 = crap poop without the hooks. Schizo band indeed. Sad they didn’t stick to what they where good at namely cranking out awesome punk rock.

The sleeve is actually florescent green but my scanner can’t handle it so black and white is what you get.

Pierce McDowell who plays bass now has a project togheter with the former Gong(they did some good stuff back in the 70s) man Gilli Smyth.

    great stuff

  2. Kinky Wizard Says:

Agree. Two rocking tunes. The other two made me puke.

  3. Tony Says:

Wow, someone taped this for me years ago and I have listened to it since then. Now I kind of see why- the vocal style and background singing on “Life Is Cheap” sounds kinda cheesy to my ears, like they’re trying really hard to be punk. “Expectations” is better but not killer for me. But maybe that’s just me. Great band name, though!

  4. Anonymous Says:

    I like track 1.

  5. Tom Says:

Wow! Never heard that one before, and I’m from Texas. Reminds me of Deprogrammer, another totally forgotten Texas punk band. Thx!

  6. Collin Says:

Hey, ‘Peter Principal’s’ jus’ fine, thanks! Life is Cheap Trick!!!

  7. Collin Says:

Well, it’s official: I’m gay, cos the two puke-poop tracks are the only good things I hear outta this mess!

  8. chris Says:

i used to live in el paso in the early 90’s and as such have been wanting a copy of this for quite sometime just for the hell of it…”life is cheap” is absolutely killer and has been a favorite ever since i heard it on one of the hyped 2 death comps. i interviewed mike nosenzo from teenage popeye for a zine that fell apart before the issue on obscure tx kbd come out…mike says they also had two 8 and 9 song demo tapes but i never received the tape he allegedly mailed…second rate to the rhythm pigs, but then again were there any other el paso punk bands at the time? probably none documented.

    I always loved that tune

  11. Mike Nosenzo Says:

This is Mike Nosenzo from Teenage Popeye. I agree! Peter Principal and 16 sucked, although D. Byrne (Talking Heads) once told me he liked 16. I have these songs and quite a few other TP rarities on CD if anyone is interested. FYI: still playing in bands and fighting the status quo. check out http://www.myspace.com/divineinfidels
    love to all

  12. SpiderFingers Says:

I was hanging out in EL Paso back in the 70’s
early 80’s. I was playing in a well known cover
band from there called Ole Scratch. I don’t think anybody gigging around there then had the balls Teenage Popeye did to play the style of punk that they were playing and to see them
live was the real treat. My hats off to those guys
for doing it like they did and not giving a shit
what anybody else thought. Hell, I would see them hauling their gear to gigs in Austin on the City Bus Lines. Fucking hardcore. That was before that Pussy Display SBSW was going on. That was the last time I saw them together. I think that was in 80 81. I have heard Divine Infidels and Mike The Noz is a great song writer. Always has been in my book. Check them out on MySpace. Those guys have a lot of great songs as well. Teenage Popeye was one of the few great things musically to ever happen to El Paso’s music scene in the 70’s and 80’s.Glad to see people still talking about them all these many years later. They must have been doing something right. Keep the flame alive boys. Keep on Rockin.

  13. Rene Says:

These guys recordings never did them justice. I saw them them blow the Ramones off the stage at a club called the Old Buffalo in El Paso. Fucking great live band

  14. Joe Says:

    FUCK TEENAGE POPEYE!
The RHYTHM PIGS were the only band from El Paso worth a shit.

  15. The Flakes // Drummer Says:

Thanks Joe for your thoughtful comment. Anything else you would like to add?

You losers must be old. AT THE DRIVE IN! MARS VOLTA! Viva El Paso!

  18. The Flakes // Drummer Says:

    You Anonymous(winner?) must be young.

  19. spiderfinger Says:

Did’nt both AT THE DRIVE IN and MARS VOlTA not
want anybody to know they were form El Paso.
They went up to Albuquerque and both got their
heads handed to them. Albuquerque has had the only
alternative and prog scene happening in the last
    20 years.

  20. Erich Says:

    Who?

  21. Suze Says:

Say what you will, I was there. Volta Schmolta. Teenage Popeye gave birth to the original music scene in El Paso. Case closed. Argue about the best but there’s something to be said for being the first.

  22. The Flakes // Drummer Says:

Ok, Suze, Anonymous, Joe, Rene, Mike Nosenzo are you sharing computers?

  23. Mike Nosenzo Says:

Hmmm…go to Mexico for a couple of weeks and look what happens. Who the fuck are you people anyway? Get a life and put your time to better use. There’s a war to stop!
