Fega Pahopp – Parlor at svinen 7″

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Progressive punk released on a progressive label? Yeah baby, Sweden had loads of these bands with one foot in the progressive field and the other in the punk swamp. I’m pretty sure some of you will hate this, but I think they were truly amazing and in a league of their own. Parlor At Svinen starts out pretty slow and very progressive but ends with some of the greatest in tune screams ever recorded in Sweden. Halla Masken is a true master piece with one of those great guitar riffs that sounds so familiar and easy and at the same time brand new and fresh.

According to a friend of mine the original cover photo was all four girls jumping out of the bath tub completely naked, but that label choose this censored version instead. Damn those progressive cowards, damn them straight to hell!

Crap Detectors – Police State? 7″

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

Still lot’s to do in my new flat. Haven’t hooked up the scanner and my turntable yet. Luckily I’ve ripped some stuff before the move. Here’s one of my recent finds that been in the posting queue for awhile. Police State is great great great. Crude punk that earned a place both on Killed By Death Vol. 9 and Bloodstains Across the Midwest. This is more or the less the child of Jim Jacobi formed in Lincon/NB 1977. Correct me if I’m wrong but from what I understand most of the Crap Detectors(except the first LP released in 1978?)stuff and Jims later incarnations(thinks he’s still going) is more on the experimental side which the b-side reveals.

…The Crap Detectors are listed on the Dead Kennedys list of Influences. Also it is claimed that Jello labels name Alternative Tentacles was based on the cover art on the ‘Victims of the Media’ LP.

Turn up the volume and wave your fist to Police State.

Oss – S/T 7″

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

This is a re-post from July the 10th 2006. Added more scans, new rips and all the tracks. First posted by the TV Eye // Drummer.

I somehow got the idea that both Tony and Behjan wants to hear this “well-crafted” piece of west coast punk, so here it is.

Oss came from Asa about 45 minutes south of Gothenburg and managed to get themselves banned from the local youth recreation centers after a show that included some pyrotechnics and TV smashing. Lucky for us the boys wrote the great song Falska Rykten about it. You might say that the song is Sweden’s answer to Banned in D.C. even if the bands are miles apart when it comes to musicality. While Bad Brains managed to make difficult songs sound easy Oss sounds like they struggled very hard to keep the songs together. On the other hand it seems like the guy who handled the scissors didn’t struggle too much when it was time to cut the inserts. Well, looking at my scanning of it now it seems like I didn’t try as hard as I actually did to place it straight…

Let me know if the sound quality is better now. I’ve done some changes in the settings that might do the trick if I’m lucky.

Usch – S/T 7″

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Here’s a classic slab of Swedish punk that’ll make you pogo in front of the computer. Sloppy, weak and totally brilliant!

This was Usch’s first 7″ out of three and it’s their punkiest and best in my opinion. Just listen to that amazing guitar sound and the fantastic way Nike Nojja handles the drums. You don’t hear too many bands sound that way today, do you?!

When they released their third 7″ they changed their name to Enola Gay while they were waiting for the record to arrive from the pressing plant, but they never bothered to inform the pressing plant about that, so now they’re called Usch on the label, but Enola Gay on the sleeve. You don’t see that too often today, do you?! And you don’t see a sleeve this ugly too often either, do you?!
