The Asteroids - S/T 7″
June 25th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Following Erichs example of dedicating a post to some of the most frequent commentators. Here’s an obscure gem for Tony of Punk Business Manager and Jay Thurston. Our punk business manager might be able to shade some light over this band since they’re from Chicago? Life On A Asteroid is nearly as good as it gets: clever arrangement, cool synths, snotty vocals and plain and simple awesomeness. Instant Knowledge might not be for everybody. How shall I describe it? Fuck it just download and listen.
Country: USA
Year: 1978
Label: Snail
Format: 7″

Thank you for the dedication. It has that simplistic charm.

A tough record to find. Another Shitcago rarity in a similar vein worth looking into here–good luck if you can score this guy’s stuff despite the lack of demand:

Sorry Peter, but this is real garbage. This was on ebay a few weeks ago, wasn’t it?

You must’ve accidentally listened to Anthrax. Try it one more time.

Hey, thanks for posting this! Wow, never heard of it before! Now I’ll be on the hunt for a copy around here in Chicago at my usual haunts (along with also looking for other local obscurities like the DV8 7″, JT IV 7″, Exit 7″, Razer 7″, etc). The A-side is the winner here for me. Given their playing (and especially the vocals) it sounds like this could have been a “fake punk”/novelty punk band. Like a bunch of studio musicians who were trying to do “the punk thing” as a one-off. I’d be very interested to know the whole story on The Asteroids. Er, I have to be honest here and say that the B-side makes me cringe a little bit when that computerized voice keeps saying “Knowledge…I want knowledge”. Thanks again for thinking of me. When I get around to doing another posting on my blog I’ll try to find some obscurity y’all might not have ever heard before.

Yeah, it sounds like a “fake punk” thing. Hope that’s so ::D
Well you dug up The Tapes from Sweden!!! Which either Martin or I had heard of!

Okay, I tried, Peter. I’m sorry to say, but ANTHRAX rules over this like your blog rules over any Slobodan Burgher blog. (with these two lines, I achieved the following: a.) flattered Peter, b.) flattered Anthrax, c.) made fun of this totally overprized 7″, d.) made fun of Slobo and his cyberpunk crew, e.) made fun of myself, f.) made myself appear like an Anthrax-metal-mosh-fan. c’mon, that’s not bad for 2 short lines!)

Ok, I’ll give you cred for a funny and witty comment Erich ;). But a record as great as this can never be overpriced. Only highly prized by the masses. I have to thank myself for uploading such a gem.

I appreciate your effort fully and thus I’d like to dedicate this comment to you!

Regarding The Tapes, it was kind of a cool feeling to post a Swedish record that some Swedes had never even heard before. I gave myself a nice, big American pat on the back for that one (ha ha). I just figured out my next two postings, when I have some time I’ll post em and let me know if you’re stumped by these obscurities.

I hate to break it to you Erich, but Anthrax really sucks! There was a time in my life, in the early ’80’s where I actually owned a record by them…I think for a week. Horrible stuff. Sorry…it had to be said.
June 27th, 2008 at 12:55 am
Well, Jay. I for my part never owned a Asteroids record. Not even in the 80s. This should be telling you something …..

C’mon , Jay ! Anthrax weren’t so bad… :-) Asteroids are really good !
June 27th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Anthrax=doo doo.

Billy Mayer, I accidentally deleted your comment when I was going to respond. Sorry.

What a great record! Especially side 2! Yes, this is a perfect example of the thousands of ‘Nu-Wave’ band wagon bands. Every record store had a wall filled with the ‘Top-50′ 45’s then there would be a bin with “Import” singles, that is independent or local band release’s. You can’t blame The Asteroids for trying to hit it big by incorporating that cheeze-tastic, futuristic sound effects on the vocals, can you?
