Traste & Superstararna - Pengar/Traktor 7″

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Give it up for some timeless farmer punk and sing along to their anthem Pengar. Then flip your mp3 player over, put on your finest vest and clogs, put lots of Brylcreme in your hair, roll down the windows in your Impala 59 and cruise around to the sweet 50’s influenced Traktor for over 5 minutes. I know Peter does it as often as possible as he can’t get enough of long songs about tractors.

TSS were huge in their hometown and according to the Encyclopedia of Swedish Punk (that I will refer to in every upcoming post by the way) they could easily draw 800 people to a show there! Very impressive I must say.

The band did a surprisingly good LP as well and a great power pop ep before they split up in 1983, and for those of you who wants to hear more without spending any money on the original releases you can pick up the brilliantly titled compilation Du din javla sopa from Massproduktion. Now head over to their myspace site for some more info on these proud province punks.

Wasted Youth - Reagan’s In L.P. 12″

Monday, July 21st, 2008

All these cheapos at Skivborsen in Stockholm/Sweden: Zero Boys, F.U.’s, Hypnotics, Reagans Youth etc etc. And of course Wasted Youths Reagan’s In. All used LPs where like 25-35 swedish crowns. About 3-4 dollars. It was easy to be a poor little punk kid then. When the TV Eye // Drummer and I where on gigs we always ditched the pizzas cause they where too expensive and if we bought some yoghurt and bread we could save a couple of crowns to spend on records instead. Always counted how many records we could get if we didn’t buy this or that. Cheap bastards!

Ok, what about Wasted Youth? Maybe not as classic as many of the other early HC releases. But considering it’s released in 1981 it’s pretty darn good for being that early. The usual punk stuff gets a good treatment in the lyrics coupled with energy and simple but inspired hardcore. Fave track Fuck Authority. Fave lyrics Uni-High Beefrag.

The Nerves - S/T E.P. 7″

Friday, July 18th, 2008

What a perfect transition. From Olho Seco to some of the best powerpop platters ever released. If you haven’t heard Hanging On The Telephone by Blondie you’ve probably been without a radio the past 25 years or so. It took me a looooonngg time till I get to know that their mega hit was actually done by The Nerves and was way better rendered in it’s original form. Totally stripped down and super thin powerpop. Goose bumps every time. Rest of the tracks are hooked laden and highly 60s influenced pop songs that will make every punker cry and longing for their studs and glue bags. I can hear you scream “play faster”. This is more punk then any and all of the dis-clones out there.

And now you fill in all the blanks about how important The Nerves where to the early L.A. punk scene and especially Peter Case.

Olho Seco - S/T E.P. 7″

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

I bet it was Goran Lind from Swedens SOD who sold me this. He was all over these obscure South American, South African, Mongolian or whatever god forsaken part of the underdeveloped world they came from. Gorans taste was usually a mixed bag to me. Mostly he always liked the worst shit on earth according to my musical standards. But that of course made him more punk then me.

The weaker the songs, recordings and packaging it was the shit for Goran. At least that’s how I thought about his punk selection.

Some pearls shone through. Olho Seco and their world wide punk hit Nada. Here Goran and I connected. He with his “anti-mohican”(shaved in the middle and curly died hair on the sides), turkish flag on the back and me with spikes or long curly hair with Damned or Discharge painted on the back of my leather jacket could pogo along and sing Nada nada nada hand in hand waiting for peace, love and anarchy to finally arrive.

Really Red - New Strings For Old Puppets E.P. 7″

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Three posts in one day! It’s like the good ol’ days in 2006. Since Erich was fast as hell with uploading his part of a Really Red split post we talked about earlier today I needed to put the big dildo out of my butt and start doing my part. Erich takes the big risk of posting their not so appreciated Despise Moral Majority 7″.

While this was my first purchase when it comes to the Really Red discography I think Modern Needs 7″ is their best out of their 4 7inches(of monster cock). Their songs has pretty easy chord structures but the WAY THEY PLAY it makes them total unique(ha ha how many times have you said that). Just listen to Ode Kurt Kren and you know what I mean. And the lyrics…

When it comes to RRs sleeves this is the winner which will make you all hot for a little cowboy with a strap on.

There shall be an insert with this one. I don’t have it. Do you? If so get in touch.

The Pinheads - Greatest hits volym 2 E.P. 7″

Monday, July 14th, 2008

From the capital of Swedish straight edge hardcore came The Pinheads who managed to release more cover songs than your average sixties garage band. Just listen to this, their first release, and enjoy the Swedish versions of Stepping Stone and Alternative TV’s Viva la rock n’ roll. One year later they released their first LP that have some great punk tunes and a bunch of covers, but also a few really annoying songs, like the song Digital backwards. Yes, that’s even more annoying then you think it is. After that they did a second ep (will be posted here later on) before they decided to just play garage covers and release cover albums til they called it a day in 85.

Two of the members came from one of Sweden’s first punk band TBC who did two ep’s in the same progg/ punky vein as Goteborg Sound, and yes, they will both be posted here later on as well.

Poor Jorgen Persson who didn’t get a cool nickname on the cover by the way. I have no idea of why, but my guess is that he was on vacation the day they did the artwork, and as the others were so jealous that he was away while they had to do all the hard work they decided that he would be the one with the lame name. Thinking about it now, this has to be the only possible explanation.

The bonus song is just yet another skit by the way and it’s the same song as the last song on the Svettens Soner ep. Just another proof that the members enjoyed funny voices, and most certainly if they were the ones making them.

Bum Kon - Drunken Sex Sucks CD

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I slagged the Local Anesthetic compilation CD cause of it’s poor mastering job but that didn’t piss smoochrecords off at all! The nice guys sent me the newly released Bum Kon CD which compiles tracks that where record at the same time as their classic Drunken Sex Suck 7″. And what a great CD this is!!!! The mastering job is fabulous! The 7″ songs sounds great on here. Just like the vinyl version. And the rest of the tracks they record… oh man. You need this BAAAADDD! If these was released as an LP back in 1983 it would’ve been a classic up there with all the greats like Jerry’s Kids, Scream, F.U.’s, Circle Jerks and then you fill in the blanks. Smoochrecords aren’t afraid that this CD would be available for free in it’s whole here and it won’t. You need to buy this and you’ll do it NOW! Just listen to 5 of the total of 25 tracks I’ve uploaded here and then head over to:

The Descendents - Ride The Wild/It’s A Hectic World 7″

Friday, July 11th, 2008

In my years with Swedens Raped Teenagers Bill Stevenson(together with Neil Peart of Rush) was the biggest influence on my drumming and to this day still is. I think no other punk drummer has kept his playing so fresh and inventive as Bill has. And the old man is still going and play as great as ever as he showed on Descendents latest master piece Cool To Be You. Get it!

Well here we have The Descendents highly acclaimed(well not really) debut. Sounding not at all like they would do just one year later. A lot more amateurish and plain punk without a trace of hardcore. I’ve learned to love this 7″ over the years. At first I hated it when hearing the songs on the Bonus Fat 12″. Nowadays I hold this very dear. Both tracks really rocks in my world.

The Cheaters - Man As Hunter E.P. 7″

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

This is a re-post from June the 8th 2006. Added more scans, new rips and all songs.

Kurt Bloch from The Fastbacks first born baby where The Cheaters. “The Cheaters were a band that didn’t really know what they were doing. The one thing they all had in common was a desire to be in a band. As a result, they learned how to be a band by hanging out and trying to play together. No one knew how to write songs, let alone proficiently play their instrument.“. Killer punk rock bordering to hardcore on Ice Man! Man As Hunter makes the powerpooper poop while Talk To You will make most people fall a sleep I guess.

The Vertex - John/Fell in love 7″

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

I told you I would post Lars Lang’s next band, and here they are; The Vertex. Dressed in their parents old suits these ex-Langs managed to write some damn fine 60’s inspired mod tunes and give them a production as thin as Ric Ocasec.

The band started out as Exit 45 before changing their name to C-Side Spinners before they settled for The Vertex and release their first EP in 1980. This however is their second and last own release as the only thing that came after this 7″ was a few songs on compilations.

The band was, together with their friends Traste & Superstararna, managed by Swedish music legend John L. Byström, who later on started the fine indiepop magazine Sound Affects that he ran until he was tragically killed in a car accident in the US in 1999.

Their first EP is very amusing since the singer has the worst English pronunciation ever, but unfortunately I sold my copy for unknown reasons about 10 years ago. And I still regret it!
