Overshadowed by their first 7″ Chop Chop Chop/Dirty Lies. But in my opinion this is way better! The third and I believe the last release from Australia’s the News. That Girl is a speedy tastefully arranged powerpunk cracker complete with piano and synthesizer. Splendid ladies and gentlemen!! I’m So Confused is a lovely complement. A soft, melancholy powerpopish “wrestling hit”(brottarhit in Swedish). Oh yeah baby this is hard to beat.

If I have to choose one Hardcore record to bring with me to an abandon squat this is the one. It represent everything I used to like about the faster version of punk rock: inventiveness, speed and for that matter some rawness. And there’s plenty of rawness. So much I first thought the recording volume was too high when I ripped it. Why this 7″ haven’t been voted into the hall of fame of those classic HC 7″ like Koro, DRI, Minor Threat or Rebel Truth is a complete mystery. Or maybe it isn’t considering the look of the sleeve and the original take on HC found in the grooves.
Knocked on the first round by In A Car. Cool. Next. Big House starts with an umpa umpa beat that makes you believe you’re in for another knock out. You are but not in the way you thought. The wacky guitar melody on Out In The Gardener puzzled me as hell when I tried to play it myself. It was before I’ve gotten into bands like Yes, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant and Univers Zero.
Later Meat Puppets wasn’t this fun though their first LP is recommended.

Kramp – YF 7″
Monday, October 13th, 2008

A good laugh makes you live longer, so take your chance and giggle along with Kramp to the cheery song YF. If you make it through the whole song you’ll feel so much happier… or maybe more annoyed than ever before. The take a listen to the b-side Disciplin and you’ll understand why I posted it here as it’s one hell of a killer song.
Kramp had nothing to do with the punk movement whatsoever, but as the members progressive band Dice was in a down-turn they thought they should give this punk thing a try and swapped instruments with each other. And they sure succeeded with their punk attempt, but seriously, 1982? Maybe they should have called the record “Are we too late for the trend?” as 77 sounding punk rock was not exactly the in thing that year.
After this release all the members continued with their music careers and are still today working as professional musicians and producers

Hornsey At War – Dead Beat Revival E.P. 7″
Monday, October 13th, 2008

5 songs of British self-produced sloppiness from the glorious year of 1979 = great punk rock in my book, and Hornsey At War was truly sloppy in all aspects of the word. With shitty production and songs very much on the edge of falling apart all through the record H.A.W. could hold a candle to Sarah Coffmann and Desperate Bicycles without any doubts what so ever.
Hear the musicians try hard to play the same song at the same time while the singer mainly mumbles as the vocal microphone is way too loud compared to the other instruments. The guitars comes and goes and the tempo in the intro is never constant for more than a few seconds as it seems like the drummer can’t hear the other members. And what about the guitar solos? And the truly deadbeat back up vocals in Anti-ego? Totally amazing in every single way and for once a saying is true; If you don’t love Hornsey at War when you’re young you have no heart, and if you don’t love them when you’re old you have no brain.
I can’t really find to much info about them online, but I’m quite sure they were from London and I just realized that Johan Kugelberg included them on his D.I.Y. top 100 list but still moderately priced far as I know, maybe because it was pressed in over 500 copies but what do I know?

The Eat – Scattered Wahoo Action Cassette
Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Haven´t compared the original tape to the recent vinyl reissue. I just hope this sounds a bit more thrilling. It´s The Eat. And it´s a damngood tape that should´ve been a semi classic if it was released on vinyl back in ´82. Did they ever try to get any labels to release it? 14 tracks and 12 of them going from really good to great. Imagine they had a pretty tuff period here as HC was about to take over and all. But fuck HC let´s punk!
