Symptoms – Be On Top/Anorexia Nervosa 7″

I don’t know how I survived without this masterpiece so long. Be On Top sums up everything what’s great about really good music: quirkiness, intense playing, a drummer that knows how to back up a good song without jerking off too much and a shitty fuzzy guitar sound. But most important the Symptoms got such an over the top singer it’s ridiculous. They where from Frisco and sure enough his voice bear certain trade marks of another more famous vocalist out of there.

Anorexia Nervosa don’t live up to the a-sides top notch craftsmanship but is still quiet enjoyable. If not when you have your girl or boy on top. Kind of a good rhythm to ride to. Yihaa!

I am not too sure as to what to say about this???

  2. Fucking fantastic. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Nice choice! A great quirky record, this one. I now have clean rips of this after years of dealing with an inferior copy. I think your finger slipped when you were typing the release date, tho, cuz this disc is from 1980 not 1989 (see the back of the sleeve). Given the crappy year 1989 was musically, it would have been a miracle if something sounding like this came out that year. I look back sometimes at the punk records I bought in 1989 and think “God, this is crap!”

Thanks Tony. It’s not 1989 but 1980 :). I think the tagging of the mp3 files are correct though. Yeah what records where good in 1989? Probably something by ALL but that’s about it. Just remember that Start Today by Gorilla B. came out in ’89. That’s a great one.

The guitar solo in Be on top is fantastic, especially the first note, and I agree with Erich once again and second his Fucking fantastic comment. Thanks for sharing.

Does anyone know if their song(s) on the 415 MUSIC comp.LP of S.F. bands is up to this 7″?

Wow. I love this one – it’s catchy and it kicks some arse too.

  9. Chano says:

Missed on this one the first time around. Very, very good!! The A side especially rips. The B side isn’t bad either. Is Jelly B.Afro on vox?? :)

  10. Rocky Graham says:

Well, someone in the band did in fact end up here. I was the bass player in the Symptoms. Those were really fun times. It most certainly was not Jello on vocals! The singer’s name was Robert Madden, who went by the name of Lester Stress at that time.

Thanks for all the (mostly) nice comments.
