While we’re on a UK trip here’s another gem in my opinion and yet another The Numbers. Sniffing on the DIY indie Television Personalities thing on the a-side and with a good dose of powerpop/punk on the b-side I think it can attract a couple of listeners here. Very charming, thin and powerless stuff for the faceless downloaders. Yeah Steve/Low Down Kids has showed his ugly face here again and I’m sure he can fill us in with some tasty stuff that will make my shitty writing obsolete.

This lot became The Very Things.
Ahh the same lot that released stuff on Crass Records?
I thought the Very Things came out of the Cravats?
Paul Shand. The Shend. Is that the confusion with the Very Things/ Cravats?
At 45 Revs (www.hurdygurdy.it), we say:
1- ROCK STARS (P. Shand)
2- LEATHER JACKET (P. Shand) //
3- FINES (P. Shand)
4- I DON’T KNOW WHAT I WANT (P. Shand)
5- FILM EXTRA (P. Shand)
06/79- Blasto Rec. SRTS/79/CUS-358 ps – 7”
Note: the picture sleeve is in fact a 7” x 7” leaflet
pasted on a generic plain white die-cut sleeve.
***
A Sussex-based four-piece Punk(y)/Powerpop
band formed in 1978 by Paul Shand (gtr/v), Bill
Darby (gtr), Trotsky (b) and Kev Willets (d).
Not to be confused with the Bristol group of
the same name (see Split Singles / Various Artists
section), this combo released a lone 7” EP,
pressed in an edition of 1,000 copies on their
own Blasto imprint in June 1979. The five self-produced
songs, all composed by Paul Shand,
show a strong melodic sense and have a new
Mod feel with Punk overtones thrown in for
good measure. Although none of the cuts is a
bona-fide classic, LEATHER JACKET should
claim D.I.Y. cult status in a TVPs/’O'Level kind
of way and the EP is recommended.
Totally wimpy and therefore incredibly great. Never heard this one before, but I love it.
The songs on the a-side are fakkin’ amazing, but the b-side is even better in my opnion. This is the record I will listen to for the rest of the night!
A Mod band from my home, Brighton, who never really abandoned their punk roots. “Film Extra” is about the day The Who filmed Quadrophenia The Movie in our city. Better live than these recordings would suggest!
Owned it, sold it, gonna download it, thanx Peter!
Thanx downloaders!!
Wonderfully wimpy & absolutely great. Another one for the wantlist.
i like the aussie numbers/riptides more
Then there’s the other Numbers from Australia too :). Check out their Govt. Boy EP.
