Yes, I know that the a-side is a dub/ reggae song despite the super cool title, so if you got a problem with that just spin the b-side as that’s a truly amazing song that builds up forever before the chorus kicks in. Once again I have to say that this is one of my favourite songs, which might not come as a big surprise to those of you who knows me as it’s British and slightly arty DIY punk from the golden year of 1979. And the intro reminds me a lot of the KSMB song “Ett ben”, but my guess is that it’s just a coincident and not a rip off from KSMB.

I wish I knew more about this band, but searching the internet gives more or less no info about the band, which is a bit odd in my opinion as
a) the record is grrrreat
b) the hand screened artwork is beyond cool (but unfortunately my scanner won’t accept the flourocent colours, so you can’t see how sweet it actually looks)
c) opening the sleeve gives a confetti rain of useless notes, receipts, un-glued labels etc apart from the usual member info (which was a drag to scan)
d), the label name sounds a lot like Runka Records
e) both songs are too long for Peter’s taste
and
f) the insert has a warning about this being a mono recording.

Now go and get your hair cut!

  1. Charlie M says:

Keith Allen is now a well known UK comedy actor – perhaps best known for his role as the Sherriff of Nottingham in the ongoing TV series Robin Hood.

  2. Just a turd in whirling pool of piss says:

    B side is very good.

  3. KevinCoed says:

Keith Allen talks about the making of this record in his autobiography. If I get the chance later I’ll type some of it up for here. He was also ‘sort of’ involved with the Swansea punk bands Page 3/Living Legends.

  4. lowdownkids says:

Keith Allen is, of course, Lily Allen’s dad. So since she made “The Fear” the Atoms’ record has been relegated to only being the family’s second-best record.

  5. The Flakes // Drummer says:

I’m almost with you there Steve though I think “Knock ’em out” is the best family Allen track so far.

  6. Martin says:

I had no idea Keith is Lily’s father, but she’s totally amazing and I’m sure her gig in Gothenburg later this summer will be one hell of a great show.

  7. Anonymous says:

    thanx for this great rec.hake

  8. The Flakes // Drummer says:

By the way as soon as Beatlejacket starts to MOVE it’s kind of cool. Runka Rinka records ha ha. Sounds like the name of finnish porn actress.

  9. Alan Allen says:

Keith Allen is the brother of Tim Allen and the cousin of Woody Allen…I think they might be related to Allen Wrench, but not sure?

  10. James Kelley says:

Do you have a place (online) where you purchase all of these gems of records, or are they all just accumulated from years of hunting in stores? I would really like to know where I could get my grubby mitts on a Tights record or a Ravjunk single.

  11. Martin says:

    Hi James,

you have the 2 first Rävjunk 7inches for sale from this swedish seller; http://www.tradera.com/Ravjunk-7-Bohman-Bohman-All-Along-the-Watchtower-auktion_95478338 along with the first Perverts and Dr Zeke. Just click “Visa säljarens alla annonser”. Not sure if the seller ships international, but you can register on that site andcontact him before you make a bid if you’re interested.

  12. lowdownkids says:

I have the CASSETTE SINGLE of The Tights’ “Howard Hughes” for sale! It’s not cheap but, well, have you ever seen another?? No, nor me. Still, it’s a cassette… not really the same, is it?? Rare though! But not cheap. But rare!

  14. Hi,
I have a totally mint copy of Max Bygraves killed my mother that I will be listing on ebay in the next few days, I will ship to anywhere in the world, so if anyone is interested in obtaining a copy of this rare single keep searching “the atoms” on ebay.

  15. Simon says:

I have this single and a friend also had it – sadly he sold it many years ago and he was lucky and got 4 different lables and a set of postcards 3 I think on red and blue card

Keith Allen was also MC on either The Bureau or Dexy’s tours I forget which

  16. Nic says:

The Atoms came out of the music scene based around The Elgin pub in Notting Hill / Ladbroke Grove in West London…

The Atoms were formed by ex-members of The Derelicts (a mid-70’s ‘Pub Rock’ band) and The 101ers (who had featured Joe Strummer), along with members of PragVec and Keith Allen (who had been hanging around the bands Page 3 / Living Legends in Cardiff before moving to London. After being arrested in the 1976 riot in London which inspired ‘White Riot’ by The Clash, he went on to be involved in the Tesco Bombers before becoming an ‘alternative comedian’ and actor)…

The back of the sleeve thanks Barbara Gogan of The Passions (who were based on Latimer Road in Ladbroke Grove, along with other groups like PragVec and the Androids of Mu)…
