I was cute enough to be mistaken for a girl as a young punk so I hardly got into any trouble with the raggare. But I was still scared as hell as soon as they showed up. How stupid and ridiculous the lyrics to Raggare… is, it captured the raw and simple emotions most punks felt/feel about them I think. A crude and simple master piece out of Sweden. Forget about Charlie it’s total crap.

Raggare
Raggare is a bunch,
Raggare is a bunch, bunch, bunch, bunch of motherfuckers
A bunch of motherfuckers!

Raggare is a gang of freaks, who always beats the Greeks.
They drive around in their big American cars.
Think they are owners of the town,
But they aren’t.
They are nothing nothing, nothing, nothing but animals.
Monkey, donkey, kangaroo
They’ve got no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no IQ.
They are nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing but animals.
Just like animals.

The only thing they do at night is fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight.
But why, why, why, why, why, why, why don’t anyone do something against it?

No one dares, the cops are scared

Totally over the top brilliant on BOTH SIDES! What’s not to like about Charlie? It’s brutal and totally messy! This is in class with the Germs, Massmedia and Middle Class when it comes to proto hardcore.
Fuck, I even like their pop records.

  2. dewey decimal says:

Just looking at the sleeve, I would never guess that those boys had a song like “Raggare” in ‘em. Must have been a real shock in ‘78 to the boys and girls who bought this record without hearing it first — hats off!

  3. Jay Thurston says:

    One great record!

  4. Ian says:

    “Monkey, donkey, kangaroo
They’ve got no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no IQ.”

FUCK, why can’t I write that good!?

Never heard Charlie before, I like it! I love it!

  5. Mr Phreek says:

Another great song Turbonegro covered! It’s nice to finally hear the original!

And “Charlie” is some good shit! The drums kinda remind me of that song “I Wanna Be a Number” by Vast Majority.

  6. Mike says:

HITS. and I agree with that vast majority reference. Gotta love those drums

  7. Charlie M says:

I found this in the early 80s on a record stall by Rough Trade in Portobello Road along with the Rukorna/TP “Antistatskivan” 7″, The ude KIds “Bjorn Borg” 7″, and a synth wave record by AK47……

As a young teen obsessed with the emergent wave of Neos, DRI type bands, I remember asking the guy, “Are these ‘hardcore’ at all?” – “Yeah, really hardcore” he replied. I was unbelievably pissed off when I got home and played them. But I kept this and it’s a gem. “The Bjorn Borg” 7″ is a classic too.

  8. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Charlie got a chord structure that each every punk used in the practice room before realizing it had been used 1000 times before. I was thinking of Vast Majority too but it’s not sloppy enough and it sounds like they take the song way too seriously. Once and for all: Charlie sucks.

  9. Tony says:

I love the Raggare song. Imo Rude Kids were a one-hit band. I also love the brilliant “Swenglish”: “why don’t anyone do something against it?”

  10. justin says:

Had to look up “raggare” and that was an interesting read. Rockers, hippies, greasers and rebel flags. Gotta love the human race. The music is perfect, thank you so much for enlightening. Is the Turbonegro cover of Raggare worth checking out?

  11. Erich says:

Hard to beat record! I totally love everything about it. My sleeve’s reversed, btw.

  12. Mat DaFuc says:

awesome band and 7″. i was actually just listening to that like 15 minutes ago in my car.

  13. Jay Thurston says:

“Charlie” reminds me of Special Duties…

  14. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Kind of agree with you there Jay. And the only good thing Special Duties did was when they quit playing.

  15. sir hake says:

this is a hell of punk rock punk will never died never.

  16. “Raggare” is a rager of a tune but my favorite Rude Kids song of all time has always been “Absolute Ruler”. Hey, I’ve been posting one new entry a week to my blog which is like a world record for me- check em out.
