DEVO, D-E-V-O. I can´t really explain the importance Devo had in my life. In so many ways more important than The Clash or Pistols. They where the band that to me showed that you could really do anything inside the boundaries of punk. Or maybe it was the contrast to all the other punk bands that showed that you really could do anything but still be punk. Much like early Adam and the Ants and Ultravox. The beauty of the late 70´s: non conformist, non stererotypical. Devo where ahead of their time and very much in line with what was going on too. If you´ve seen the “Men who make the music” video and not became an instant Devo fan after that I think you´ll never be. Thought about digging out my original yellow Devo suit(that was owned by a radio dj who was sent to him as a promo upon the release of Q: Are we not men?) from the 70s and taking a picture accompanion this post but maaaan I´m way too lazy for that. By the way this the rarer spanish sleeve. Or is it the dutch?

I must agree with you. As good as the Clash and The Sex Pistols were, DEVO had something above it all. Even now with the new album they sound better than anything that came out since their last album (Smooth Noodle Maps). Mark Mothersbaugh was one of the nicest recording artists I’ve ever met.
1. Wear gaudy colors or avoid display
2. Lay a million eggs or give birth to one
3. The littlest may survive & the unfit may live
4. Be like your ancestors or be different
5. We must repeat
Thanks for reminding me of this gem (Gut Feeling)……….not 100% on this but I think the ES tagged on the end of the catalogue number stands foe Espana, plus the wording “distributed in Portugal” on the sleeve suggests Spanish neck of the woods………..fab site man, keep the good tuneage coming ;-)
yes – DeVo are sadly unrecognised for their quirky genius – gut feeling is a brilliant song, altho satisfactio always left me a bit cold. Please dig out the suit & take that photo!
GREAT GREAT GREAT!!! The band that got my addicted to weird music!!!
Great post.Devo are a great band.
gut feeling is one of my favorite songs of all times. everytime i broke up with a girlfriend or quit a job, I thought of this song…
You are all a bunch of mongoloids!
Another great post. I love this song. I like to play it when I dj punk records. I’m not an expert on these things but when I picked up my copy of this pressing I was told it was a Portuguese pressing.
Yepp, it’s the Portugese press :). It’s a bit of internal humour about “the dutch sleeve” going back to a Buzzcocks post.
Doh! See what I get for being serious :).
I remember as a kid, before having a clue what punk even was, I loved Devo cause they were just so different and quirky. Little did I know that that was just the beginning of it all for me. Nice post.
Whoa! Is this the Dutch sleeve??? Great record!!!!
From what I’ve heard, there seems to be a rare dutch sleeve variation around.
“Editado e distribuído em Portugal” on the back cover, it might be a joke! Obvious
Still one of the best and still relevant. Great post!
They were in a league of their own. The Hardcore Devo demos from the early seventies prove they were years ahead of their contemporaries. I’m not familiar with any of their recent material – I thought they went off the boil after the first couple of albums and lost track of them a bit after that. Gut Feeling is a brilliant track.
agreed the demos are the best stuff
saw them in tornto play are we not men, and freedom of choice best show of my life
every 1 stinks
I remember trading all my AC/DC cassettes to a friend for all of his DeVo Vinyl back in 1980 (I was 12 years old and just about to discover SST-type stuff for myself). Been a DEVO fan forever! Their new CD kicks ass, too! Oh, and that movie, “The Men who Make the Music” has this scene with this hippie and then this punk rocker dude with a jacket that says, “Don’t Shoot, I’m a Man.” That’s a track from their new CD. I was so surprised when my 14 year old daughter pointed it out to me. I’m a blockhead from So. Cal!
