Magic De Spell – Nightmare E.P. 7″

Yeah, I know this is getting a bit boring, but here’s yet another Greek punk platter.
I believe this is the first, or at least one of the very first Greek punk records, and it’s yet another smasher. Maybe not that much fuck-shit-up in attitude or sound, but more of a 60’s garage influenced postpunk sound, but with such a brilliant snare drum sound it’s almost silly! Just listen to those fast snare rolls and then tell me you don’t love it. And what about that fuzzed out rhythm guitar in Sweating all over! Again a bloody killer!
If you want your punk rock as straight as possible, I’d recomend that you start with Virgin Freedom and end with Poor Johnny. By the way, how many songs are there with the name Johnny in the title? Waaaay too many, while not enough songs about Glendora.

  1. Totally great! Love the fuzzy guitars….never heard of this one at all. And you can never go wrong with a car-crash sound bite at the beginning and/or ending of a song. Thanks for this!

I don’t know why my user name has that big-ass number instead of MAFFISH, but whatever. Great post anyway! I hate computers.

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard, or heard of Magic De Spell all those years back, but I appreciate your posting their tunes. Greek punk – a small, yet significant phenomena, mostly in Athens – has probably been considerably underrepresented in the past.

    pretty, pretty, pretty good.

brilliant post, never heard before. I agree with Maffish, the fuzzy guitars make this EP and the greek english voice is simply charmin’, I can’t resist listen to again and again. Nice!!!! I have their first LP ‘A Body In A Snare’ and this album goes more into wave/pop sound. There’s also a version of ‘Poor Johnny’s Lonely Blues’ on it but not as great as here. I think, I post their LP on my Blog and who’s interested is welcome.

Keep up the posts! The Greeks are interesting in that they, for better or worse, introduced democracy. In hick places like Sweden and the USA this has been a curse (rural rule), but maybe someday each country will have it’s own Exarchia. Fuck pigs, antifa! Kill Obama and Romney–though I prefer basketball (and punk rock).
