Sham 69 – Borstal Breakout 7″

Considered an Oi! band for some mysterious reason. A lot of skinheads in their audience. So what? While thinking about this I did some googling and found some words from Jimmy Pursey himself:
The band never was and never will be anything to do with Oi!
Myself always thought of Sham as one of the early great punk bands from the first waves. I Don’t Wanna was also one of the first punk songs I heard when I tuned into Radio Luxemburg in 1977. Anyway, Borstal Breakout is a great love song:
“Well now I’m over the wall I’m nearly home
I’m coming through that door coming back to you
Now I’m nearly home nearly back for you
There’s gonna be a borstal breakout”

This might be the rare Ethiopian sleeve version.

Hi, this is The Italian edition. Cheers.

  3. That sleeve is either hideous or too good to be true. I wonder if whoever did it is satisfied with the 9 in 69? When I was slightly younger I thought the connection between Sham & oi was their name, as I thought 69 was a reference to spirit of 69 and skinheads liked oi, and therefore Sham. Now I know where the name came from so I know I was wrong.
Great record and a great band anyhow, but how come you’ve been posting so much oi lately Peter?

    Total Classic!! Luv it!! :-)

  5. Johnny Balbao says:

Never liked Sham 69, and always hated Jimmy Prusey as a person. Music is very decent to my ears!

  6. Damon Onion says:

I think it was the Straight up No bullshit working class attitude that put them in the Oi Category.
