Tant Brun - Nej4/Sa mycke’ skit… 7″

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Tant Brun came from Jonkoping, aka Sweden’s Jerusalem. The city is mainly known for it’s billion churches, a very good ice hockey team, Dag Hammarskjold, The Cardigans and d-beat punk, but it should be known for Tant Brun.

As a kid growing up in the twin city Huskvarna I never heard of them, which feels pretty weird as I remember seeing posters and jackets tagged with every other local band but them. It might have to do with the fact that they had a manager and were considered a bit too good looking, but who knows… At least the guy in shorts and sandals manage to look very hot. Among the numerous bands from the area Tant Brun were the only ones who managed to release records during the first wave of punk, and they are most likely the only band ever to use the phrase “varandra ar ett reciprokt pronomen”. Even if they didn’t like school they managed to pick up some swedish grammar for sure.

Apart from the rocking tunes on this 7″ they released another 7″ in 1981 before they decided to call it a day. That one is more in the power pop vein, but still good enough to be posted here if Peter allows me to do it…

Frank Details - False Pretences/Strangers On A Train 7″

Arty and a little twisted but of course great UK punk. Can’t decide which I like the best False Pretences which is the obvious hit with it’s full on force punk sound. Or Strangers On A Train with it’s pulsating and aggressive steady beat. I tend to spin Strangers… a lot more. I love sleeves like this who don’t reveal how the record sounds. It’s ugly and boring but coupled with how the record actually sounds it makes you feel like you’ve discovered something great that other people would miss cause of the design of it.

Frank Details have been comped on Everyones A Classic and the Chuck’s Messthetics comps:”Frank Details were were built around two guitarists -Richard Furzer and Andy Milner- who shared a distinct taste for the New York City sounds of Richard Hell, Television, and [Fred and] Patti Smith.“. After reading this I can cleary hear Hell and Television in there.

This is a re-post from April the 12th 2006. Added more scans, new rips and For var frihet.

Another great record from a not-so-well known swedish band. Can this be described as ”drumplaying in a discharge-style with desperate vocals”? This is the only record made by this band and I love it so much…

Cosmic Overdose - Observation galen 7″

Like a Swedish answer to Geza X’s The Deadbeats. This has to be one of the most underrated Swedish gems out there. Observation galen is such an instant hit. This is their only “punk” release but from what I remember when seeing them on the telly in the early 80’s they had some more punky tunes. They quiet fast went into a more synth direction which I happen to like a lot too. Their first LP Dada Koko still has some punk in it so it might be worth checking out for some visitors here. Their second LP 4668 is great but more of a darker synth album. Listen to the very special guitar playing on Isolatorer that became kind of a trademark for CO. After awhile they evolved into the two man synth band Twice A Man which still today did some of the greatest gigs I’ve been to visually.

Non Compos Mentis(N.C.M.) - Ultimate Orgasm 7″

As far as I’m concerned few guitarist have used feedback in such a creative way in punk as David Hill of Texas Non Compos Mentis. I have a hard time choosing a fave here. While Ultimate Orgasm just hits you in the face as the obvious hit Twist The Blades tasteful contrast between the calm verse and the catchy chorus is just as hard to resist.

Their second single is not as good as this but not as bad as it’s reputation and deserves a post later on. If we’re talking THE best song by N.C.M. nothing beats the furious Six Feet Under included on the Sacred Cattle compilation. Check it out and listen to the instant drive of the bass drum! Who needs double bass drums ha ha.

This is a re-post from March the 26th 2006. Added more scans, new rips, Livet ar mjolk, Stan’s original, SFF and De nakna och de doda. Punk för fan motherfucker.

If Panik are playing two ordinary punksongs on this rare split 7″, then Missbrukarna are playing some extra-ordinary punk. Short, fast punkrock sung in swedish with intensity and humour.
Later they also released a tape, more in the hardcore-vein, called “Krigets gentleman” in 1983 I think.

Time for some powerpop. A band I once again know nothing about. I heard it for the first time at www.lowdownkids.com and just became madly obssesed by tracking down a copy of this wonderful baby. (Obsolete information: Couldn’t find it on any comps but after a couple of months I found a copy and it turned down to be on white vinyl. Anyone seen another of these? I though only a black vinyl version existed.) Anyway I think Steve at Low Down Kids know more about the Producers. On many japanese collectors want list. And for a good reason.

This is a re-post from July the 26th 2006. Added more scans, new rips and Star Struck.

Once again I have to thank the worlds best expert on 70’s porn and obscure 70’s punk from the UK: Steve/Low Down Kids for revealing the Jakpak on the famous LDK boot series(rest in peace). AWESOME punk/powerpop at it’s finest. James at Worthless Trash also posted this in his first redesigned podcast. Check out his new killer concept at www.worthless-trash.blogspot.com.

So Steve, what is there to know about Jakpak? I couldn’t find anything on this thing we call the World Wide Web.

Two punks in their earlie 30s making music that sounds like it was played by a bunch of higly talented teen punks. You think this is great? Then you shall hear their cover of “Eve Of Destruction” that is even better then the Dickies version! I’ll post that later on so keep watching. Stains - John Wayne Was A Nazi/Born To Die 7″

stains_label_a.jpgstains_label_b.jpg

The fact that this was posted 1 year ago over at Good Bad Erich needs to be celebrated with this repost including all the scans. As you all know Stains moved to SF and became MDC.

One of my highlights in my career as the drummer for Swedens Raped Teenagers was when we opened up for MDC in Stockholm 1987. MDC came in and was all over the place except for Dave that I was able to talk a little to and seemed mentally stable and physically fit. The bass player kept asking for pot and was one hell of a guy when it came to yoga. I was amazed at how he could bend his legs when he did some yoga right before the gig. They where also very supportive and told us we kicked ass. We had our bald headed, skinny violinist Lachen with us that didn’t seem to be appreciated by all the studs and mohawks punk. But we rocked and left them with an impression that you can use violin in HC if you want to.

It’s a new year coming and remember that we all where born to die!!!
