Quizz Kids has been posted here before as they had a song on the Live på Musikverket compilation, but here’s their own EP as well. It was recorded in 1979, which initially made me think it would sound like their demo songs included in this post, but  that was not the case. I have no idea what kind of audience they had in mind when they recorded the EP, but my guess is that they were trying to reach a wider audience then just the punks.

Fruitcake is a pretty boring reggae song that sounds a lot like The Clash did on Black Market Clash, while Tomorrow is a great punk smasher. The last track Suicide is a slow acoustic number, which left me totally blank the first time I heard it. None the less it’ grew on me over time, and is now actually my favorite track on the record. Give it a few spins and you’ll see that it’s actually a great song that sounds like it’s about to burst into some wild punk riffing anytime, but never does.

The two demo songs are more traditional punk, where Dax is my favorite, even if Cruising in my daddys car has a great and very stupid sounding chorus. Great and amusing impression of what raggare sounds like, and you can hear the other members laughing in the background if you listen carefully.

Sonny Vincents first(?) and total classic band the Testors. That they’ve gotten more recognition recently then when they where around doesn’t come as a surprise. Germanys Incognito Records have released some great post humous releases that I highly recommend! Listening to the demos they recorded in 1977 is totally mind blowing. Sonny is still going though I’ve not heard any of his recent stuff. Any good? So here’s Testors sole release with a two tracker that should’ve been a huge hit in my opinion.

Found a short clip on YouTube from an upcoming Testors DVD but what really blowed my away was this clip with Sonny Vincent and the Extremes:

Shas – S/T E.P. 7″

What the heck was going on in Asa in the late 70s/ early 80s? So many bands from such a small village, and here’s one of the more obscure ones. There were more bands from the same place that unfortunately never ended up on vinyl, so if we’ll ever get to hear bands like Akut (who shared 2 members with Glo by the way), Container 2000 and Hamnd is still to be known.

This EP was posted by Paul over at the excellent site Girls from Tahiti a while ago, but judging from the comments on his site, not too many people have found their way over their yet. What a shame!

Anyway, I wanted to post my copy as well, as listening to it gives you the same warm feeling as you get from sitting in front of a fire place thanks to all the background noise. Judging from the look and sound of it, my guess is that it’s one of the many copies that was thrown from a bridge when the members got tired of them and decided play Frisbee with the remaining copies.  And with a photo copied, but glued cover it sure is a great copy I found. I wouldn’t mind a better copy though, so if you have a stack of them, please let me know.

While ripping the record I couldn’t help but notice that all four songs range between 1.23 and 1.25, so maybe that was the maximum lenght the drummer could play? He sure didn’t waist any energy on fills for sure. The only thing even remotely close to a drum fill is in En idiots drom, which just might be the worst attempt to play reggae ever recorded. The first time I heard the record I actually thought it was a drum machine and not a real person who played the skin flute. Well, the other guys didn’t try too hard to play anything but the basic notes in the songs either, so maybe they decided that less is just enough?

Re-post from Sep. 7th 2006. New high quality rips of all the tracks plus bigger scans. When I read the post again I wonder why I never played this record for Packe since I’ve had it since the early 1980’s. Same goes with the awful Gollywog 7″ from 1978 that I thankfully got rid off. What does LLR means by the way?

As you know both Peter and I are from Sweden so I guess you like us to post some swedish nuggets! Well, I don´t want to disappoint you so here´s a smasher from Brülbåjz. I hadn´t heard this until early 90´s and was totally blown away! This is top 20 swedish 7″ if you ask me.

Member/members later found fame in SATOR – a swedish punk/rock band.

Bakrus – Nettan/Lamrock 7″

Bakrus were not a punkband, but rather five incredibly handsome raggare from Asa (yep, the same town as Glo, Oss and Shas) that released two 7″ where this is the second one, and the only one worth hanging in the fir-tree. The a-side Nettan is the sad story of a poor girl who’s boyfriend died and she became a speed addicted prostitute. Of course the story ends with poor Nettan dead in a dirty bathroom. Very moralizing boogie rock and so fucking Swedish. Oh sorry, I forgot to mention that the song sucks despite the incredibly funny lyrics, and for those of you who don’t understand Swedish you can follow the story in the pictures shown on the back of the sleeve. And while talking about the sleeve it’s impossible to avoid mentioning how incredibly ugly it is in every single way. It makes GG’s early artwork appear as fine art in comparison.

Lamrock (cock rock) was included on KBD 51 and it’s a great smasher, and could just as well been a song by  TT Garderob 100 or Goteborg Sound (and if you take a closer look at the cover art you’ll even see one of the TT beer cans that gave TT Garderob 100 a part of their name). I guess the heritage from football choirs, classic rock and especially Status Quo was too hard for the Gothenburg scene to escape. Something else that’s hard to escape is the fact that this record was somehow sponsored by the removal company Centrum-Expressen who put their logo on the sleeve. What were those guys thinking? If I ran a company I’m not so sure that putting my logo on a record with songs about the hard life of a prostitute, and the story about a sad sod who desperately wants to loose his virginity would be the greatest idea ever. But what do I know, maybe they got loads of new costumers after this record came out? If anyone knows the story behind this, please let me know.
