First posted by the now defunct(?) Something I Learned Today blog. What shall hit you first is the extremly great guitar sound. Fuzzy, messy and cheap. Sounds like it has been amplified through a small 10 Watt Marshall(you know these cigarette package sized ones) pushed up to eleven. The lyrics are composed with care and true concern about inmates, Reagan, animals, tyrants and the usual suspect. A nice punk package for someone getting into punk and its philosophy for the first time.

By the way this is an awesome record! Enjoy.

I don’t know what to say about this. Words can hardly describe the greatness of the debute from The Celibate Rifles. Energhy checked. Ok! Tightness checked. Ok! Melodies that stands out checked. Ok! Good lyrics checked. Ok! Lets download.

Thanks for the MASSES of emails that came and still are coming in for The Eat contest. But the contest ended the 24th of July. Winners will be announced shortly.

In my opinion this is the last good record GG did. Perfect blend of straight up punk and some hardcore. What the hell does the cover picture? A skull yeah and then some crosses. A scar? One of the ugliest covers I’ve seen. And it’s not ugly in a good way! Just good damn ugly.

Here’s some words I came up with while thinking about GG: idiot, cunt, dick, duck, suck, cunt, fuck, kill, anus, ass, turd, bird, lard, barn, sperm, licking, shit, finskahoran, handskmannen, bajskorv, fisring, läskpapper, prispress, rea, lantställe, listetta, pantflaska, liberalanal, sill, potatis and freedom.

The sleeves are on loan from Break My Face. I’ve never been a big Social Distortion fan but 1945 have been hunting me for years and years. I love that song. The Stones cover Under My Thumb is not for me. Boring. Playpen is ok but again nothing compared to 1945. Lacks the catchiness and of course it drags on far too long. This is actually the only record I like with them.

If anyone can make a good 300dpi scan of the above sleeve or the blue one let me know.

While I’m in the mood for hardcore so I better go for it. But don’t you worry! The marvelous powerpop and weak punk that I usually post will come back faster then you can say: hypernevrouakustiskdiafragmakontravibration.

Can you imagen they wanted 35 swedish crowns(about $5.00) for this in 1982?? What a theft! I didn’t want to pay that so into my jacket it went. If you by any chance have missed this classic here’s your chance to pick it up. From the time when NY HC where great. Ok Ralp Gebbia ain’t the best dude to be in cue with the rhythm but far from as annoying as Ray Cappo in Youth Of Today. Amazing production! Buzzaw guitar sound and swooshing hi hat. And man do they look cool? Take a look at the lyric sheet. Hats, long coats and don’t the guy far left wear a mustache? Fave tracks: all.

V/A - No Core Compilation Cassette

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

nocore_sleeve.jpg nocore_side_a.jpgnocore_side_b.jpg

When I heard this it reminded me exactly why I fell in love with hardcore. Every band has a sound of their own and they’re all at least good.

Colcor: May be the least interesting band on here but the drum intro to Nervous Wreck is priceless plus a couple of other tunes.

No Labels: They’re on the “Why are we here” compilation that have been posted here sometime ago. I’ve always thought that the “Why…” comp. original was released as this tape. No Labels are great in a small dose. Some standout tracks: Still The Same, I’m Tired, Missing The Point, Mental Pygmy and I Play Games.

No Rock Stars: My favourite band on here. Sounds VERY much like Minor Threat ala Out Of Step era. Just listen to Too Negative and Death. They also deliever the best track on here: Thrash. I whish they had more tracks by these guys instead of No Labels and Colcor. What happened to this great band after this?

Corrosion Of Conformity: I’ve never been a fan of C.O.C. so I wasn’t expecting too much here. But they clock in as second best only beaten by No Rock Stars(yes it’s a contest). Beats everything I’ve heard by C.O.C. so far and Citizen has to be their best track ever. If I have to complain about one thing then its that I would’ve loved to have the singing style of the song No Core and the sound of Citizen on every C.O.C. track. And yeah they’re doing a cover of the KBD classic Rather See You Dead by Legionaire’s Disease Band.

Crucifix - Nineteen Eighty Four E.P. 7″

crucifix_front.jpg crucifix_sleeve.jpgcrucifix_inside.jpg

crucifix_label_a.jpg crucifix_label_b.jpg

The only let down to me is that the b-side isn’t as raw and catchy as the a-side. Steelcase Enclosure is a waste of space but Rise And Fall is great. While Rise And Fall is great Prejudice is awesome. The rawness overwhelmes me everytime. Their follow up to this the Dehumanization LP is good too but tends to be a little tiresome after some spins. You know it’s the problem with too many of them dis and that bands. A couple of songs slips throug which is great then they’re on repeat with the same chord structure over and over. The only thing that changes is the ability of the drummers to execute the d-beat.

And yeah the lyrics. When I interviewd Henry Rollins 1984 I handed over the first demo from our old band called War Child(ha ha ha). It was pure dis and that stuff with war lyrics mostly written by me. He looked into my eyes and asked me:”Don’t you guys ever get tired of singing about war all the time?”. “Eh no I think it’s a really important subject.”. Ha ha.

As much as I hate the tiresome subject of broken hearts in emo bands I despise the war theme among punk bands. Never mind the peace punks here’s the Crucifix.

Urban Waste - S/T E.P. 7″

urbanwaste_lyric_a.jpgurbanwaste_lyric_b.jpgurbanwaste_info_a.jpgurbanwaste_info_b.jpg

Back with a bang! There’s great HC and there’s utterly disgraceful HC. This falls into the first category. This is the real deal. No poses or some kids just discovering HC and singing about how great it is and that we have to mosh, skate and stick togheter like one while we’re spinning the other generic HC record after another.

This post is dedicated to Mr. Power Metal/Erich Good Bad Music to pay him back for his nice dedication.

As a poor little punk kid brought up by my mother working her ass off as a nurse there weren’t much money around for her son to buy those tasty punk and HC records coming out in the early 80s.

So what could one do? Steal of course! On the left side of my leather jacket I had ripped a large hole where 7inches nicely fitted in.

On a visit to my father who lived in Stockholm I always payed the several record stores in the capital of Sweden a visit. In the corner of the big hooker street Malmskillnadsgatan in Stockholm they had this really good record store called Record Pool(If my memory serves me). A rainy autumn day in 1983 they had both the Urban Waste and the Cause For Alarm 7inches. I hadn’t heard them but since every punk record released back then where at least decent I didn’t hesitate to pull ‘em both into my punk jacket and heading out of there.

Now repeat after me kids and old farts:
I’m not into punk rock. I’m not into hardcore. Don’t you try to label me. Public opinion!

Here’s one of those essential US HC 7inches. Distorted, fucked up, raw and recorded live in the studio. The end result is of course fantastic. These guys where already tired of Straight Edge and this was in 1982 kids. Their 12inch EP “What´s Going On” was a big disappointment. To polished and boring.

This is a re-post from July the 28th 2006. Added more scans.
