V/A - Local Anhesthetic CD

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I really WANT to recommend this compilation. It’s greatly designed with a cool looking photo on the front of…yeah who? It’s small details like this that is missing here. A detailed story about every band and the recording is also missing. Too bad. Some interesting and fun stories by Duane Travis of Wax Trax and others is in the 6 page booklet.

My biggest concern about this release is the quality of the mastering job though. I’m sorry to say that it’s horrible done compared to the originals(those records I own and can compare with like Frantix, Defex, Bum Kon and White Trash). Listen to I Hate Toes here to the one ripped from the vinyl a couple of weeks ago. The difference is just too big. It’s noisy, thin and too much treble. Sounds like it’s a 128 mp3 rip. Sad sad sad cause I really want to recommend this comp to everyone since it got the whole EPs from Frantix, Bum Kon, White Trash, Your Funeral, Young Weasels, Gluons with Allen Ginsberg, Jeri Rossi, Rok Tots, Defex and Nails.

Why I didn’t get to hear White Trash for the first time until a couple of years ago is really strange. It got all the qualities that the classic HC 7inches released 80-83 had like: Koro, Minor Threat, SOA, Deep Wound… you fill in the blanks. Tight playing. Great songs, production and lyrics about nazis, war and Reagan. Add to that it’s on the classic Local Anesthetic label that released gems like: Frantix and Bum Kon. Play this loud while you enjoy this:

Inspired by Good Bad Erich’s recent posts of a bunch of tapes I decided to jump the bandwagon.

From whom and when I got this tape I can’t exactly recall. Mid to early 80’s for sure. And from someone in Canada without a doubt. This tape has been very dear to me ever since. Too bad I didn’t make a straight copy of it back then. As you can hear it have been played quiet a lot and on top of that the recording is very low fi which of course only makes it better. Here’s a good recipe to make HC sound great: add chainsaw guitars, machine gun drums and some decent song writing. That’s what Manic Depressors did and as you can hear it worked great. Please if you know anything about this band fill us in.

Detention - Dead Rock ‘N Rollers 7″

Inspired by Erichs post of the German band Napalm(who later morphed into Napalm Death) as a tribute to the fat king Elvis death 30 years ago my contribution to the master of peanut butter and hamburger is Dead Rock N Rollers by Detention. Since Erich posted this some time ago you can also find it here: You ain’t nothing but a hound dog. A kind person named Mikhail wrote down the lyrics in the comment section, all in capital letters:

JIMI HENDRIX AND JANIS JOPLIN AND KEITH MOON AND ELVIS PRESLEY ARE DEAD. PULLED THE PLUG ON THEMSELVES. DEAD ROCK N ROLLERS THEY WERE OUTTA-CONTROLLERS, PLAYED THE DRUG GAME BUT THEY COULDNT MAINTAIN AND NOW THEYRE DEAD. OFFED THEMSELVES FOR THE BIG BUZZ. JIMMY MORRISON AND SID VICIOUS AND JOHN BELUSHI AND JOHN BONHAM WERE WEAK. COULDNT TAKE IT AT THE PEAK. DEAD ROCK N ROLLERS THEY WERE OUTTA-CONTROLLERS, I GUESS THEY FELT LAME SO THEY SNUFFED THEIR BRAINS AND NOW THEY’RE DEAD. WHY COULDNT IT BE BARRY MANILOW? I MEAN I WAS NEVER CRAZY ABOUT JOHN LENNON, BUT AT LEAST HE DIDNT DROWN TO DEATH IN HIS OWN PUKE. AND WHAT ABOUT YOU, JIM CARROLL? ALL YOUR FRIENDS HAVE. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? DO IT!! DEAD ROCK N ROLLERS THEY WERE OUTTA-CONTROLLERS, PLAYED THE FINAL SOLUTION, MASSIVE MIND POLLUTION AND THEYRE DEAD.

From what I recall I was glad when Elvis died. After all he wasn’t a punk rocker.

I like this better now then when I bought it. Back then I thought it was just another quiet boring Dishcharge rip off with horrible sound. Now I love it. The guitar sound is just amazing. Anyone hearing similaritys to the guitar sound of the first Minor Threat 7″? I do. Very dry and not too much distortion. Great!

Can’t recall seeing Absurd live and what happens to the guys after this beats me. On the lyric sheet they state that their next 7″ would be released in the summer/autumn 1983. That didn’t happen. Senap this is a call for you.

As a contrast to the scary looking sleeve I got two cards thrown in from I guess was found in the packages of Honey Puffs? Last year some people here in Sweden got hold of the singer(who’s now a priest) and stripped him of some sleevles copies. Beware that they’re selling them with very good repro sleeves without letting you know.

Feeling tuff? Got a shaved head? Here’s something for you. Another stolen item. I was a teenage record thief. I won’t go on about CFA. It’s a classic record that most of you know. Sure it’s good but a bit overrated. Kind of genErich in the long run.

Listen to this! What does it sound like? Yeah yeah it sounds like Hardcore but what else? Does it sound like any other band? No it dosen’t. Here’s a proof that the so called Hardcore gengre haven’t evolved. It went Devo way. Devolution.

Ha ha it incorporated metal you say? Yeah it did. And what did it lead too? All the jooks went to the HC scene and it all started to suck bad both music and attitude wise.

“Messing up our scene, wasted human beings. Lost their ticket to go, to the AC-DC show(nudge nudge Erich). Can’t see the future, only the past(nudge nudge me). Angry and confused, the world moves too fast. Rednecks, Rednecks out for blood (x4). They didn’t get enough oxygen. When they were born. Only enough life in their heads to grow their hair long.” From Redneck. Genious? Genious!

C.I.A. posted before and Reflex From Pain members went on to form 76% Uncertain. Pick up their live stuff posted sometime ago.

The TV Eye // Drummer got this in the mid 80s from a german distributor as a replacement for another record he intially bought. He wasn’t too sad about it. After a couple of years it finally landed on my turntable in a trade with Calle from the almighty Outlast.

I think I’ll repeat what most people here know: J.Mascis on drums and Lou Barlow on guitar. The two later formed Dinosaur JR a band I enjoyed too in their early stage. Barlow later formed Sebadoh.

Went to see Dinosaur JR in 1992 and was yelling at Mascis to play some Deep Wound:”Play Sick Of Fun with that hysterical yelling J!”. He only smiled back. But nothing they’ve done beats this. Fast and furious Boston HC with great lyrics. They can handle both the speed as in Sisters and the slow stuff as in Dead Babies. And that Radiobeat sound with Lou Giordano behind the mixing desk. How the hell where they able to pull out such great and unique sounds out of their studios? Inne Ear in DC, Radiobeat in Boston, Spaceward in the UK and Bosses Sound in Sweden.

1000 pressed(thanks Erich) and bootleged several times.

Could just as well been the first 76% Uncertain 7inch. C.I.A. released an LP but by then they had lost their backbone: Bones-Vocals, Kenny-Rythm Guitar and Bill-Drums(on this recording he was still in Reflex From Pain) who went on to form 76% Uncertain. Yes the LP sucks.

Up here is classic US HC from 1983. Essential lyrics like on the 7 second long Who Cares? topped with great song writing and clever arrangement. Tasty!

Necros - Conquest For Death 7″

Monday, August 14th, 2006

necros_conquest.jpgThe best Necros 7inch besides their first Sex Drive. And Take Em Up is their best song ever. Both musically and especially lyrically: “Take em up take em up. Those cripples in their wheelchairs. Take em up take em up. Can’t park close to anywhere. Take em up take em up. My cars ten miles away. Take em up take em up. Cripples gonna hafta pay. Chorus: When I go to the store. I can’t park in front no more. And at the discoteque I hafta park in back. Take em up take em up. Special places two and three. Take em up take em up. No places for you and me. Take em up take em up. Special stickers on their cars. Take em up take em up. So you know who they are.”

For ONCE a band adressed a sever problem here in the western world that actually touch people!
