You got to respect a band that opened up for such phenomenal acts like Ultravox, XTC and Fingerprintz(I must post something from this excellent band). And that they gigged with the Bureaucrats is nothing to be ashamed of either. But no matter what bands Canadas Red Squares played with, their one and only single stand as one of the greatest moment in Canadian punk history. Everything I know about them is from the great booklet that follows Smash The State Volume 3. The single came from the pressing plants with reversed labels as a result some band member attacked “…some copies with exacto knives, slicing the song titles out and gluing them on the proper side.” The pressing of the sleeve fucked up too so less then 250 copies came with the sleeve you can see here.
“I can’t stand the vacant stares. The vacant people with their vacant cares. The government girls and the government guys. In the government suits telling government lies. Automatic pleasure and automated pain. Automatic, instamatic, kodacolour brain.” -Ottawa Today. Pure poetry. Two classics for you to enjoy.

Ever since I heard this on tape, it’s been on my wantlist, but somehow never found a decent copy. Both songs are incredible, kinda weird mix of styles. Phenomenal! Top of the top!

“Transmitter” is punky psychedelia. Besides the telegraph beeps you have the surf licks, the acid guitar and those funny noises a la 13th Floor Elevators! Great single, tak
