The Flakes – Straight Jacket E.P. 7″

flakes_straight.jpgThis is the band I’m in so I let other people speak for us.

Todd from Razorcake:”…It’s something I imagine Rodney Bigenheimer losing his shit over in the early ’80s that would stand the test of time today. I’d place this right at peak top of this hard-to-conquer-genre.”.

Josh Ruthledge at Now Wave:”Swedens Flakes obviously know what far too many bands don’t know: if you’re gonna play POP, you’re gonna need GREAT SONGS! It’s not enough to merely play tuneful, melodic music. You need that all-important HIT—the kind of super-catchy smash that gets stuck in people’s heads, lodging itself so deep inside the brain that not even the world’s top neurosurgeon could get it out of there. Those of us who love good pop know what it’s like to get hooked by a song like that. But you don’t hear that kind of tune every day. It takes talent, skill, and good old-fashioned craft to cook up the perfect pop song.“.

The list of great reviews could go on and on but I stop here. 500 copies on clear vinyl and hand numbered lyric sheet.

Hell yeah!!! This rules! Awesome shit!

  2. Erich says:

Really impressive! Believe it or not, but the riff of the first song “She’s so natural”, could be from the brandnew (released today) IRON MAIDEN album (which is awesome, btw).

  3. CORPUS 77 says:

SORRY, NOT MY CUP OF TEA !

    CHEERS CORPUS 77

  4. bitterandrew says:

Don’t like it far too wimpy needs more bollocks! The band sound like they can play very well and the singer has a good voice all the same. Hope I don’t offend anyone here!

Isn’t there alaso a band from the usa called the Flakes on the Awesome Hostage records

  6. The Flakes // Drummer says:

No you don’t offend anyone. You either have good taste or you don’t.

  7. Lord Scrotum says:

Fantastic! Where can I get my hands on a copy? The Flakes website doesn’t seem to want to open. “She’s So Natural” is the best song I’ve heard for … well since the last best one I heard. Love it!

  8. dylan says:

i think its good. when are you playing la?

  9. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Love to play LA! If “NiteOwl”,”Adam Wilson”,”septicnecro”,”inkntunes” real name Mike Rush would set up a tour we would come. Yepp there’s the US The Flakes though we took our name before them. There where also a US powerpop band in 1982 named The Flakes. We need a nice label. Get in touch: info@kbdrecords.com

  10. Jay says:

I love this record, and gave it a good review in Punk Planet a couple years ago.

  11. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Hi Jay! I still haven’t read that review. Is it possible to send a scan? I’m also curious if you reviewed the second “Can’t Stand…”.

  12. Spencer says:

Absolutely love it. Can’t help but jump and dance around.

  13. kingarne says:

    Pure Pop For Now People!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Pointy Pete says:

I’m fairly new to the site hence the time gap but I have to say that this is awesome and you guys would have been on top of the pops in 1979.

  15. Marmiteboy says:

Great record lads. Reminds me a bit of Elvis Costello at his sneering best.

  16. Jay Thurston says:

She’s so natural sounds like Elvis Costello and the Attractions…I haven’t listened to the rest yet.

  17. Jay Thurston says:

….wow! Who is that drummer? That guy is fucking incredible!!!

  18. Erich says:

I’m the drummer. Thanks for the nice words, Jay.

  19. The Flakes // Drummer says:

    Ha ha ha :).

  20. Jay Thurston says:

The best drummer ever…and even shares great music with us. Now, that is class!

  21. timmythepunk says:

shes so natural is very very much appreciated its like 1979 again, me thinks the other two trax need more barre chords and distortion, thanks for this site its awesome

  22. Erich says:

Just tried to sing “she’s so natural” under the shower – it worked! What sets this apart from crap like “Rich White Males” is that even if it tries to sound like 79, it doesn’t. I was right – it’s Iron Maiden riffing with a little overdone vocal-harmonizing. The singer’s the weak point here – I had assumed that before, but since singing my own version under the shower, I’m 100% sure now. He shouldn’t try so hard to sing clean cause he obviously ain’t got no voice for that (just like me). A bite more raunchyness would help.

    You’re welcome.

  23. Jay Thurston says:

Hey Peter, have you made plans to come to the US yet??? Just curious.

  24. The Flakes // Drummer says:

I’m going to Minneapolis next week but the band won’t follow.

  25. Jay Thurston says:

Minneapolis??? What, are Husker Du getting back together? Have fun. Hope someday your band makes it here…should be fun.

  26. franchy says:

great stuff, where can i get a copy if still possible??

  27. The Flakes // Drummer says:

    Sent you an email franchy!

  28. When I asked Peter for a copy, he promised to send one. But never did. :-(

  29. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Ha ha WHY would you like to have a copy of a crappy powerpoop single Erich?

  30. Because I like it and I love you :-)

  31. elliott says:

peter how can i get mor of your band’s music? and mor raped teenagers. i don’t know why but i can tell it’s you on drums in both bands. if i heard raped teenagers and then the flakes without anyone telling me they had the same drummer i could just tell it’s the same amazing dude. if you ever play la i would be so fucking excited.

    • Jay Thurston says:

I am Peter’s manager and he told me to tell you the best way to find his famous records are “on Ebay”. Otherwise, you are “shit out of luck”…oh, and some drummer named Phil Collins, played the drums on “Straight Jacket” because Peter didn’t want to get his famous hands injured…

  32. Nathan G says:

    Niice!
