Prejudice as I am I think it’s not that common to have two blacks in a powerpop band? As the thing with Bad Brains, four blacks playing manic punk. The Heat where from New York and besides this released an LP on MCA. Instant Love is as pure and as wimpy as only really good powerpop can be. Fuck Punk Rock and its hate and violence slogans we need some love man! Instant love!

Great Mod/Poppunk!!
They really had a good UK go with this one – sent promos to all manner of no-hoper regional radio stations. Didn’t work. Their image wasn’t conventional enough, and they had too much of a whiff of ‘industry’ about them. Pity, cos it’s a good record – thanks for the post!
Yeah, and of course, that ‘whiff of industry’ might have come courtesy front-man Tally Taliaferrow being a member of music-industry-casualties and unrecorded New York rock legends, the Planets. Oh, and I guess he was black too – you’re right.
Hey there, this is Geoff Lee, bass player with The Heat. We’re playing CBGB’s Friday nite September 15, 2006 at 12:30 a.m. You can hear “Instant Love” live if you like.
Cheers
The web address below should work, the file takes a while to download. http://homepage.mac.com//jeffreyformosa
instant love was one of the best of the new wave pop/punk indy singles ever. glad to see that it has survived in cyberspace. to the guys in the band, thanks for a good’un.
Tx much, Steve Sonic!
We’re all still live ‘n’ kickin’. There’s a rockumentary in the woiks about The Heat, and I’ve a decent archive that is constantly accumulating. Recently The Heat was memorialized in the “GoNIGHTCLUBBING” exhibition at NYU Fales Library, showcasing the work of Pat Ivers and Emily Armstrong who shot videos extensively in the late 70s-early 80’s. Appreciate the kind words!! ;-)
Geoff
Wish this would have made radio-play in 1979, great song!
would love to check out the album on MCA – can’t find any information about it at all online, not even a track listing. “Instant Love” is addicting. Been listening to it quite a lot since downloading this. thanks!
TO Ed Rothstein above – In fact, this song, Instant Love, was played a lot on WNEW and WPLJ in New York City. The flip side “High School Sweater” also got a lot of radio play. The Heat was interviewed on one of those stations at that time. After the English/Wales tour, the band got signed to Polygram Records, minus singer Dwyt Dayan, and a trio version of “High School Sweater” was played on American Bandstand.
One of the best two-sided 45 rpm records ever made. This is how power pop should be!! I have this record still in my ‘favorites’ stack after 30+ years. I only wish I knew if they ever recorded another single?!?
To edlongus: So good to hear you have Instant Love/High School Sweater after all this time. I just recently found the English single which is a remix that I will digitize in the near future so you can compare! I have ‘nother pop style song you would probably love also on Facebook ‘ “Made For Each Other. Please friend me on FB and I will send you more links: Geoff Lee
btw: Currently working on The Heat’s rockumentary, gathering pix and video from way back, and hope to make more music by The Heat available in the coming months. Geoff Lee – bass player for The Heat
Heat fans, check out thebandtheheat.com. Ten studio tracks by THE HEAT that were recently resurrected and THE HEAT LIVE AT MAX’S KANSAS CITY , April 1980, the last show with Dwytt Dyan, in wonderful LO-FI.
The Haskels from Milwaukee also had two black guys.
Yes, and you can find The Haskels here too.
