Raise your hands if you know anything about the Mirrors. Over at Lipstick Killers Comphell site you can read that this 7″ is on a Japanese compilation named Crack! along with other bands I’ve never heard of.

If you’re like me and think that XTC and Devo are two of the greatest bands who’ve ever walked the earth then this is for you.

    great stuff!!

  2. Decent Jazzrock, would be nice to hear in a bar (haha, as if I’d ever go to bars, haha). Nowhere near DEVO – totally lacks the o.t.t.-feeling DEVO had.

  3. The Flakes // Drummer says:

ha ha ha jazzrock :). Erich, you need to go back to school. More on the XTC side then Devo for sure. But they got that herky jerky feel from Devo.

Damn, this is maybe my favorite Japanese punk record from the late 70’s! Both Mirrors 7″s which were on the pretty good Gozira label are artpunk masterpieces (to my ears at least). The thick bass playing on both 7″s is top notch especially. Besides two 7″s, the Mirrors appeared in the great “Tokyo Rockers” movie from ’79 with a wonderful track called “Passenger” that has mesmerizing bass playing too. Then in the late 80’s/early 90’s that “Crack!” comp came out and there were a few unreleased live tracks of theirs on it. About 3 years ago a Mirrors live CD called “Real State” came out which was decent but not as good as their 7″s. The Gozira label also released the cool Mr. Kite 7″ and the great Tsunematsu Masatoshi 7″ (he was a later member of Friction I believe). But Gozira also released the mediocre Flesh 7″ and Maria 023 7″EP. In general, I really dig Japanese punk from the late 70’s, a lot of which was in the “artpunk vein”– check out Anarchy, Boys Boys, Friction, Mods and Speed if you haven’t already. Then there’s the amazing, wild proto-hardcore S.S. live 12″EP from March of 1979 which is one of my favorite records ever. Just a crazy disc that was hardcore several years before it exploded in the U.S. And, if you haven’t already, check out the fantastic “Tokyo New Wave” live comp LP from ’79- lots of great tunes on that one, very few of which are wimpy new wave.

Love it. The guitar solos in “Out of Order” are out of control and perfect.
