I think this the first of the two releases(the second release coming up later on) that Active Ingredients released at the same time. Two awesome 7inches in a limited run of 250 copies each. As soon as you hear the guitar in the intro of Hyper Exaggeration you know you’re about to be blown away. Then in comes this hyper pitched synth that got a sound that make dogs cry. Marvelous. Powerpop synth punk on the highest level. Bird On Fire got a twisted jerky edge that I like just as much.
Franché Coma who plays bass on these two tracks was also in the Misfits:

This record rips. And it’s one of the few fairly successful uses of keyboards on an early 80s record. Great find!
The A-side of this record is pretty good, but my favorite song by them is “Laundramat Loverboy” on the other 7″- killer use of keyboards on that song especially! I didn’t know Franchie Coma from the Misfits played in the band.
Ha ha Tony you’re possum jenkins :D. Ok ok. By the way I’m looking forward to that punkbusinessmanager blog. Great name by the way ho ho ;).
Ya, I am Possum and Possum is me. I got the name from this character in a hilarious music video from a few years ago. Punk Business Manager- when that certain person called me that a while back, I thought it was a fucking perfect name for a blog. I have some “themes” for posts ready to go. Er, I already have another blog planned, dedicated to this great college radio show I listened to as a teen:

Wow, if Elvis Costello was more punk, this could’ve been the sound. Another nice pick.
Paul F
The second track’s keyboard riffs sound like The Doors.
so so true!!!
Are these the same folks who did a 7″ with a funny song about “rock stars”? I have been looking for that single for about 20 years!
David, the first song that comes to my mind about rock stars is Bollocks (from Maryland) who did a funny song called “All Rock Stars Should Be Drafted” back in 1981 on a 7″EP of the same name– maybe this is the record you’re looking for? If so, then I have several copies for trade if you’re interested.
David, The Active Ingredients you are talking about was from Kentucky. They had a song called “Rockstar” on their “Bringing down the big boys” 7 inch from ’85. It was on Fat man records. And one last thing, don’t forget to NEVER listen to Tony, he will mislead you all the time. He doesn’t know shit.
Also, this Active Ingredients is way better than than the Kentucky one. Kentucky one is typical mid 80’s hardcore.
Dear Batso; Man that is a relief to find out even that much. The damn songs have been caught in my head since that hot summer in Utica back in 1985!
I heard this on a radio show in the early 90’s in Phoenix, Az. Never have seen a copy of this in a bin. Still looking.
i have a copy of these two in mint condition
This record is the closest thing i can compare to -what it is like on==”Speed/-the drug”,a musical masterpiece!!!!!
Also Why it is so Obscure and not circulated aswell as The Misifts records/7″s is a mystery,…..a top notch recording!!!!!!!!
Also since one of the 7″s were destroyed for the front sleeve art, then wouldnt the # of copies floating around be “249” and not 250…?….
I paid alot for my copy afew yrs back, and well worth the 600 bucks…..
600 dollars? Really? Never seen it go for that much.
when anything related to “The Misfits” was at peak $$$ , 5 or 6 yrs ago ……
These songs are fucking great… first pics I’ve ever found from it… and didn’t know there were alternate vinyl rips online. Great site.
Hey Dextro! Yeah , I was there.. You wouldnt believe what hes got for vinyl..

This is the Lodi NJ Active Ingredients. My best friend growing up is the keyboard player here, he is playing a Farfisa organ and not a synth. He was 13 at the time, it’s his kid voice at the end of “Bird On Fire,” which he also wrote.
I haven’t heard these recordings in many years, but I think they hold up pretty well. Good songs and an interesting sound.
