Two absolutely awesome tracks: Life Is Cheap which kills and Expectations who destroys. Why did Teenage Popeye have to ruin it with the two other completely shit tracks: Peter Principal = worthless cock rock without the big dick just a moist little penis and She’s Only 16 = crap poop without the hooks. Schizo band indeed. Sad they didn’t stick to what they where good at namely cranking out awesome punk rock.
The sleeve is actually florescent green but my scanner can’t handle it so black and white is what you get.
Pierce McDowell who plays bass now has a project togheter with the former Gong(they did some good stuff back in the 70s) man Gilli Smyth.

Agree. Two rocking tunes. The other two made me puke.
Wow, someone taped this for me years ago and I have listened to it since then. Now I kind of see why- the vocal style and background singing on “Life Is Cheap” sounds kinda cheesy to my ears, like they’re trying really hard to be punk. “Expectations” is better but not killer for me. But maybe that’s just me. Great band name, though!
I like track 1.
Wow! Never heard that one before, and I’m from Texas. Reminds me of Deprogrammer, another totally forgotten Texas punk band. Thx!
Hey, ‘Peter Principal’s’ jus’ fine, thanks! Life is Cheap Trick!!!
Well, it’s official: I’m gay, cos the two puke-poop tracks are the only good things I hear outta this mess!
i used to live in el paso in the early 90’s and as such have been wanting a copy of this for quite sometime just for the hell of it…”life is cheap” is absolutely killer and has been a favorite ever since i heard it on one of the hyped 2 death comps. i interviewed mike nosenzo from teenage popeye for a zine that fell apart before the issue on obscure tx kbd come out…mike says they also had two 8 and 9 song demo tapes but i never received the tape he allegedly mailed…second rate to the rhythm pigs, but then again were there any other el paso punk bands at the time? probably none documented.
cheap sex in cheap motels, cheap drugs get well
I always loved that tune
This is Mike Nosenzo from Teenage Popeye. I agree! Peter Principal and 16 sucked, although D. Byrne (Talking Heads) once told me he liked 16. I have these songs and quite a few other TP rarities on CD if anyone is interested. FYI: still playing in bands and fighting the status quo. check out http://www.myspace.com/divineinfidels
love to all
I was hanging out in EL Paso back in the 70’s
early 80’s. I was playing in a well known cover
band from there called Ole Scratch. I don’t think anybody gigging around there then had the balls Teenage Popeye did to play the style of punk that they were playing and to see them
live was the real treat. My hats off to those guys
for doing it like they did and not giving a shit
what anybody else thought. Hell, I would see them hauling their gear to gigs in Austin on the City Bus Lines. Fucking hardcore. That was before that Pussy Display SBSW was going on. That was the last time I saw them together. I think that was in 80 81. I have heard Divine Infidels and Mike The Noz is a great song writer. Always has been in my book. Check them out on MySpace. Those guys have a lot of great songs as well. Teenage Popeye was one of the few great things musically to ever happen to El Paso’s music scene in the 70’s and 80’s.Glad to see people still talking about them all these many years later. They must have been doing something right. Keep the flame alive boys. Keep on Rockin.
These guys recordings never did them justice. I saw them them blow the Ramones off the stage at a club called the Old Buffalo in El Paso. Fucking great live band
FUCK TEENAGE POPEYE!
The RHYTHM PIGS were the only band from El Paso worth a shit.
Thanks Joe for your thoughtful comment. Anything else you would like to add?
You losers must be old. AT THE DRIVE IN! MARS VOLTA! Viva El Paso!
You Anonymous(winner?) must be young.
Did’nt both AT THE DRIVE IN and MARS VOlTA not
want anybody to know they were form El Paso.
They went up to Albuquerque and both got their
heads handed to them. Albuquerque has had the only
alternative and prog scene happening in the last
Say what you will, I was there. Volta Schmolta. Teenage Popeye gave birth to the original music scene in El Paso. Case closed. Argue about the best but there’s something to be said for being the first.
Ok, Suze, Anonymous, Joe, Rene, Mike Nosenzo are you sharing computers?
Hmmm…go to Mexico for a couple of weeks and look what happens. Who the fuck are you people anyway? Get a life and put your time to better use. There’s a war to stop!
This is one the most underrated Texas records and in my opinion ALL FOUR tracks are AWESOME. How could anyone not be blown away by the super duper nymphomaniac drama of 16?
And by the way, Gilly Smith from Gong is a woman.
Hey, I played in punk band in El Paso in the early Eighties. I remember Teenage Popeye, but only by name, I was just a little too young to have gone seen them. There was also another band called “Windfall”. They were like a Pablo Cruise cover band, but them and TP were the main bands at the time. There were a bunch of punk/new wave bands playing the Rathskellar and the Mesa Inn. Like the Civilians, One Second Zero (they had a cooler name first, but I can’t remember it) and if course The Pigs. My band was called The Outer Class and while we never got any notoriety in the scene, our first gig was at the Rathskellar opening for D.R.I. and TSOL. Thanks for posting these mp3’s I thought I’d never hear TP again!!
Thanks for dropping by Marco! Got any music with your band to share?
I saw One Second Zero, at the “sub” in Juarez, plus they had their song “Money Talked” on the juke box
Any idea as to what happended to them, or where to get themusic ?
I saw Teenage Popeye at a battle of the bands at the El Paso Coliseum in 1981. Very cool. They were the first punk band I heard doing “I Fought the Law.” (Yes, I heard their version before the one by the Clash.) Anyway, I don’t remember who won the battle of the bands (maybe a band called IZE??) but I voted for Teenage Popeye.
I’m just amazed at how many El Paso folks are commenting on this site. I grew up in El Paso (1971 to 1994), but didn’t get into punk rock until about 85 or so, but even then, as a young kid I didn’t go to many shows cause I went to one show and some skinheads (C.O.F.) beat the crap outta me and some friends–they used golf clubs for christ sakes!. Anyway, I’ve heard of Teenage Popeye but this is the first time I got to actually hear them.
On it’s own, it’s a little slow and so/so but speaking from a totally relevant view of the El Paso scene, this 7″ is freakin’ genious. Thanks so much for posting this, as well as the first Rhythm Pigs 7″ on here–I never had that, yet I had a tape recording of it fortunately. This site is great.
Political Junkie ruled the El Paso new wave scene in the early 1980s. Mesa Inn Stage Door Lounge house band.
this is horrible. thanks.
you must be joking. this is a great record. she’s only 16 and life is cheap are two classic songs. thanks peter!
nope, not joking elliott.
oh that’s too bad. i really like this 7. a texas classic.
Punk Rock Reunion Show Dec 23 in El Paso featuring Teenage Popeye, the Rhythm Pigs and the Plugz.
After giving piss a chance, these tunes grew like moss on me. In my crappy opinion this record is well worthy of its cyber home. Is this the only record on here that has your namesake in one of the song titles?
Rhythm Pigs(cochinos de ritmo) shared a band member w/ Abandon Ship (SKA) any one remember them? P.S. I was partial 2 Windfall
