Inspired by Erichs post of the German band Napalm(who later morphed into Napalm Death) as a tribute to the fat king Elvis death 30 years ago my contribution to the master of peanut butter and hamburger is Dead Rock N Rollers by Detention. Since Erich posted this some time ago you can also find it here: You ain’t nothing but a hound dog. A kind person named Mikhail wrote down the lyrics in the comment section, all in capital letters:

JIMI HENDRIX AND JANIS JOPLIN AND KEITH MOON AND ELVIS PRESLEY ARE DEAD. PULLED THE PLUG ON THEMSELVES. DEAD ROCK N ROLLERS THEY WERE OUTTA-CONTROLLERS, PLAYED THE DRUG GAME BUT THEY COULDNT MAINTAIN AND NOW THEYRE DEAD. OFFED THEMSELVES FOR THE BIG BUZZ. JIMMY MORRISON AND SID VICIOUS AND JOHN BELUSHI AND JOHN BONHAM WERE WEAK. COULDNT TAKE IT AT THE PEAK. DEAD ROCK N ROLLERS THEY WERE OUTTA-CONTROLLERS, I GUESS THEY FELT LAME SO THEY SNUFFED THEIR BRAINS AND NOW THEY’RE DEAD. WHY COULDNT IT BE BARRY MANILOW? I MEAN I WAS NEVER CRAZY ABOUT JOHN LENNON, BUT AT LEAST HE DIDNT DROWN TO DEATH IN HIS OWN PUKE. AND WHAT ABOUT YOU, JIM CARROLL? ALL YOUR FRIENDS HAVE. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? DO IT!! DEAD ROCK N ROLLERS THEY WERE OUTTA-CONTROLLERS, PLAYED THE FINAL SOLUTION, MASSIVE MIND POLLUTION AND THEYRE DEAD.

From what I recall I was glad when Elvis died. After all he wasn’t a punk rocker.

Wasn’t it bad enough that the King got treated so mean from ‘Cilla and Dr. Necropolis?

  2. Mikhail says:

all caps is the only way to write lyrics. one of my favorite songs. ever. cheers,

First of all CONGRATIULATIONS and MANY MANY ThanX for your great site. I’ve found so many goodies and treasures within the last few months and I won’t miss your page. It’s like a ritual to daily check whether you have new stuff online.
There’s only one problem I don’t have a solution for: every time I saved your cover files on my hard disk and try to open them then it fails with the following comments: “Can’t read file header! Unknown file format or file not found!”
Do you know what to do to open the cover jpgs?
Your help is being very much appreciated
All the best for your blog !!! Keep on doin’ your excellent work !
    Mitch

  4. Chata Ortega says:

I must say i find it rather tasteless that you say you were glad when Elvis died. He wasn’t exactly Hitler or something.

  5. Erich says:

Elvis Hitler. He was the Führers secret child. Everybody knows it.

  6. The Flakes // Drummer says:

    Punk rock is tasteless.

  7. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Mitch, have you tried another picture viewer? Haven’t had any problems with them on my PC.

  8. Milky says:

ELVIS WAS NOT THE KING OF PEANUTBUTTER AND HAMBURGER. HASIL. ADKINS. WAS.
C’mon “Peanut Butter Rock n’ Roll”?
Taking raw frozen chunks of hamburger from his freezer and gnawing on it?
Carrying raw haburger around in a ziplock bag in his pocket so he could snack on it like popcorn?

Iggy was the PRINCE of peanutbutter and hamburger for obvious reasons.
Elvis is maybe the second superintendent of hamburger and peanut butter.

    You should be ashamed.
    Shame. Shame. Shame.

  9. Johan says:

read in some swedish fanzine: “why do you have a picture of hitler on the wall in your bathroom? it’s not hitler it’s elvis”

  10. LBRO says:

There’s a Detention tribute video on youtube just type in dead rock n rollers.

  11. Ian EBH says:

“Dead Rock n Rollers” was a mixtape favorite of mine from the Killed By Death series for years. I wish I had more info. on them, but it’s great to finally see the artwork/logo from the original record.

  12. Mitch says:

    Hello Flakes / Drummer !
Yes, I tried to open it with Irfan View and I too tried to open them with Corel Photo Paint as well as tryin’ to import them in Corel Photo Paint. I even tried to make a snap shot of the picture with “Snag it” and to save the snapshot, but nothing worked. And I tried it not only with one of your covers, I tried it with dozens of them. I wasn’t able to save any of the pics. Real strange, isn’t it ?
Which viewer do you use ?
    Greets
    Mitch

  13. The Flakes // Drummer says:

That sound REALLY strange. Scan the sleeves into Photoshop and then I export them as .jpgs. I haven’t had any trouble viewing them at different PCs. Anyonelse having problems with the sleeves?

I’m using the internal viewer in XP at home and at work with Vista. I’ve tried Irfan View, Photoshop and ACDsee and had no problems.

Do you have problems with sleeves from the other blogs?

  14. Mitch says:

Now it’s getting really strange. I managed to open the jpgs with the preview in the context menu of the Windows Picture Viewer integrated in WinXP. Then I saved them into a directory. I tried to open them again with Irfan View and it worked. That sounds good, BUT: when I copy them back into the original directory (where I stored the downloaded pics) and replace the originals, and when I try to open them then again, it does NOT work. Copying them in any other directory works when opening the pics. It seems that pics and audio files in the same directory is like a cat fightin’ with a dog !

  15. Mitch says:

    Hey Flakes Drummer,
now I finally got it. The reason was that I named the directory as the title of the 7inch, that means there were ” signs (inverted commas) in it. I removed them from the directory’s name and: everything works now.
Strange windows – if you can’t wiork on filesy in the directory Windows shouldn’t accept ” in the directory’s name !
But anyway thanks for your help and may someone up somewhere help you in finding more and more records from the early days of punk.
    Pure self-interest :-)

  16. Kris W says:

I love how the “I WAS NEVER CRAZY ABOUT JOHN LENNON BUT AT LEAST HE DIDNT DROWN TO DEATH IN HIS OWN PUKE” is spoken in that smarmy tone.

TO ALL VIEWERS: please do not neglect to donate to this site. Hey a couple bucks (or five like I donated) every now and then is an appropriate thanks for all this site offers ie mp3s, sleeves, info… Dont cheap out (cause you know you probably saved as many of these files as I have)

  17. Middle_School_for_life says:

I find it hard to believe that Napalm Death morphed out of any german band since they are/were British(Birmingham??).They were originally a crust band on the peripheral end of the whole Crass “scene”. Their fiirst…ahem..singer went on to front fellow grind pioneers Carcass.

  18. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Middle_School_for_life: I guess you´re a newcomer to the site and haven´t get to know the special humor surrounding some of the blogs. But where ND really a crust band? We called them grind core in the 80s.

  19. And I thought the first singer of the crusties Napalm Death went on to front Oasis. :-(

I love you. I no longer have a record player – I am desperately looking for the recordings of Destroy All Bands

  22. socialblast says:

This should’ve come out eleven years later and included Kurt Cobain

  23. Sluggo says:

All of Jim Carroll’s friends died, and now he has followed suit!

  24. jeff s says:

Can one imagine what Bonhams style would be at this stage?

  25. Dave Y. says:

I remember I heard this 16 years ago on Pat Duncan’s show on WFMU. “Dead Rock n Rollers” wasn’t the version I remember from his show, but it was probably a taped performance from his show.

  26. Nathan G says:

I was never a big fan of John Lennon, but at least he didn’t choke on his own vomit!

  27. Nathan G says:

Who the hell is Jim Carrol?

  28. Sidney Beers says:

    Napalm doesn’t became Napalm Death.
Napalm was from Hamburg, Germany and N. Death was from the UK

  29. Martin Peacock says:

Did Detention ever officially release their 2nd album? I had a tape of it sent to me years ago by a friend of the band, in response to a letter I had published in Maximum Rock n Roll. He also sent me a copy of their 1st album along with some concert photos. The version of Dead Rockers I know best is live, and came from a cassette called “I’m Buck Naked”. It had 5 live tracks by the band on it. Jeez, I loved those songs. Still do.
