Does it matter if it’s a first press or not? To some it does. This is the first press which you can tell by the labels being white instead of yellow as on the second press, pressed up in the late 80s(?). The bass got a great plonk sound and the guitar has just so much treble it’s on the border to hurt your ears.
To my ears the whole production sounds very proto hardcore. The year of release is 1978 but could’ve been 1981 too if you ask me. I’m especially found of Chris D’s vocals and of course his great lyrics. This debut and their first LP is alright with me yeah yeah.

Great record, but the tracks on “Tooth & Nail” are the best they ever recorded, if you ask me. There seems to be a demo around from that session, with additional songs. If anybody has it, PLEASE drope me a line!
PS: I have the 2nd press. *sob*
I’ll one-up on the collector-geek scale–I own an original test pressing from 1978 with a hand-written label, done in pencil. Sounds like the official pressing, though. This was one of my all-time fave bands but I know nothing of a demo from Tooth and Nail sessions floating around–I’d snake that in a second.
I will only say that at least they were from Hollywood…oh, and for Erich…it takes me back to 1978…oh yeah.
The demo is on the CD of No Questions Asked, along with this single and the Tooth and Nail tracks. Flyboys are backing Chris D on this. Agony Shorthand mentions that “it’s alright with me” that his girlfriend dances at the Ivar. This shouldn’t be alright with anyone as the Ivar is the sleaziest grossest strip joint ever. Just thinking about my visit to that place with El Duce makes me queazy.
gross things are punk
ever hear a song called rockaway beach?
Another great tip is the Flyboys EP ! I love this new wave EP and gotta hear it pretty regularly.
To me Chris D. is a poet and a genius. I hear the first two Flesheaters LPs and there is simply nothing else anywhere like this: he is a horror gothic roots-rock Beatnik and we are…less.
The glory days of the Ivar…Duces hangout. Didn’t Courtney Love use to dance there??? I am pretty sure she did. Then she married that cross dresser from Leaving Trains…then married a druggie…killed the druggie and Duce and she gets her dope for free. Wow. What a life. Oh yeah, the Flyboys were great.
The Ivar was a toilet…there was a club next door, down this long hallway called the Gaslight, roughly the size of your living room…GWAR actually played there in like 88 or 89…the lightbulb hanging over the stage at the ivar and perverts snapping poloroids while Duce MC’d the thing…..middle aged strippers with tract marks on their arms and legs…..those were different times..wow!
I used to attend the Gaslight, when I wasn’t at Rajis. Saw a ton of great bands there.
One of the best records. Stop by and pick up their 1st LPs. Cheers!
Not good, annoying. That LA band, Le Face, is like 200x better than this shit. Fuck this.
marcus? that you?
Only the first track has irritating vocals…
You must be kidding! Do you mean this Le Face:
http://www.myspace.com/leface
Le Face sounds like the Urinals and ??? I can’t quite put my finger on it???? Not bad.
Le Face = Le Retro Crap.
If you like this early LA stuff, do yourself and get a copy of ‘Delusions of Grandeur’ from U.X.A.
I’ve been listening to this album three times a day for the last week…it rulez.
I love this band, especially “pony dress” song. Anyone has “No question asked” 12″ 1980 to share?
Look in the comment section. hvdns, a link to your site is coming up!
Someday soon I’ll get around to posting ‘Forever Came Today’ as well… a link would be great!
So I might pick “A Minute to pray” one day (DJ Rhyme).
Sorry Boulder, for some reason your comments ends up in the spam section. Maybe cause you’re using the onlineclock link. Anyway, yes the UXA LP is a long time fave.
Dee Detroit’s voice is painful…but I still love it.
YEAH!! One of the best bands in the classic comp. LP “Back to front” Vol. 05
I LOVE IT!
Some of their later stuff I didn’t get into too much, but this 7-inch is truly filthy. It’s good to hear the other songs that were not on that one Back To Front album. Sehr gut!
One of the greatest records ever by one of the greatest bands ever. Their first four albums are equally intense, I especially love A Minute To Pray… and Forever Came Today. As for their more recent material (Dragstrip Riot, etc.), give it a chance. It’s good stuff. Chris D. is still a superb singer/screamer and songwriter. His new material goes beyond the metal-punk of the early Flesh Eaters and brings in roots rock, 70’s hard rock, and folk rock influences. He never lets me down. His Stone By Stone ‘I Pass For Human’ LP and ‘Love Cannot Die’ solo LP are personal favorites.
wow, reading all these comments takes me back, what can you cay about the original FleshEaters besides legendary. I was an original local fan that wound up playing bass with the Dragstrip Riot era FleshEaters for a few albums and tours. Chris D. is an amazing poet, writer, and producer that I am honored to have written songs with.
