Here’s post number 600. More then 2 years has gone by since this shitty blog started. Unbelievable bad and expensive punk has been posted. Generic hardcore has been praised. Powerpop has been downloaded in thousands by hordes of japanese melody fans without leaving a comment. And I’m sorry to say that there’s still loads of crap left to post.Â
When we(the TV Eye // Drummer who left after a year) started this site the two main inspirations was 7inchpunk.com for it’s music and Last Days of Man for it’s layout. 7inchpunk.com guys turned out to be run by a boring brat so the inspiration that the site had provided faded pretty quick. While Joe Stumbles Last Days has continued to be a big inspiration with it’s excellent writing. On the road it seems like 100s of new punk/hc blogs has been pooping up every month. While there are too many of them to mention them all here’s some that I’ve continued to enjoy: Good Bad Music, obviously for the funny and witty writing, great music and for being one of the most frequent commentators here. Erich and I has during the years done some split posts and more will come. Worthless Trash for it’s excellent taste in music and great writing. James needs more hits! 45Revolutions for being a complement to yeah that’s right 45 Revolutions the book. And the list can go on for some time so sorry that I’ve forgotten YOU.
About Last Day… seen some recent trackbacks from Joe and when he recently posted the debut LP of the fantastic and HIGLY underrated Th’ Inbred I had to post their debut 7″ as a complement. Have to agree on Joes reflection “I think this LP represents the closing chapter on the first wave of US Hardcore. It collapses into a pile of self-loathing and disgust.”. On Scene Deat Th’ Inbred already made it clear they soon where about to leave the “HC scene”: “We shout and spit the lyrics out. We know what punk’s all about. We play fast and loud ’cause we wanna be the in-crowd.”. When you listen to this I think you can hear that hardcore used to be non-generic and with a knack for great ideas.Â

Cheers to 600 posts! I’ve always enjoyed this blog a lot more than others and is one of the very few I frequently visit (others being Good Music, Mad Blasts Of Chaos and 7inchCRUST).
Oh and I totally agree with the comment about 7 Inch Punk. Only douche bags watermark their 7″s they post and ruin the artwork. The dude has posted some decent records but most of them are poorly ripped. That and the chaotic japcore and really bad 80’s hardcore get old after awhile. I like the way you post all genres and it’s refreshing to hear bands most would consider dollar bin losers.

I know it’s for camera focus purposes, but I think Erich’s bear is the best unintentional watermark out there. It makes hardcore soft and cuddly. Never heard the 7″, just the first LP. 600??? You fuckers have some stamina!!
Just to make this clear: I do not use the bear as a watermark. I only use it when the record cover doesn’t fit on the flat scanner = for lps. I originally thought the bear would make it visible that it’s a photo only, with all its limitations (disproportions etc). On the other hand, Malfeitor is right: It makes Hardcore soft and cuddly and thus perfectly reflects my own cuddlyness. I’m a bear.
The first lp is great but this is even better . The rawer edge only add to the wild sound of this awesome band !!! Thanx for this ripping post , Pete . :-)

thanks for posting this, can’t wait to get off work and hear it…just listened to the first lp a few nights ago, always a favorite of mine. always wanted to hear the first ep. i believe their drummer played in the rhythm pigs (another great underrated group) briefly, on tour and the live lp maybe? i interviewed ed ivey a few years back and need to unearth that i suppose…

I saw this in the last paragraph just now and have to make a correction. In “Scene Death” he’s not singing “In crowd”, it’s “Ian Crowd”, as in Ian MacKaye and Minor Threat.

It’s been years since I’ve played the Inbred and years since I’ve had a working turntable, but I remember always laughing when the singer twisted “IN” into “Ian”. I’m no expert on the Dischord Vs. Everyone Else thing, but the Dischord scene was underage, put on flyer shows in halls and weren’t known for caring for outsiders.
I was 20 in 1981 and thought the SXE kids were barely out of junior high school. They wanted to know me as much as I wanted to hang out with angry bald children with stupid magic marker slashes on their hands. Fountain Of Youth Records was another prep school/educated civil service offspring endeavor. DC, like any other city, had a varied punk scene. Dischord got most of the attention. They did also have the best marketing, designs and prices. Jeff Nelson really kicked as as a designer.
The singer for No Trend worked at Joe’s Record Paradise. It was hard to get him to talk. If generalized contempt was a number, his would have been infinity +1. He must have loathed Dischord as much as he did melody.
Many of the Dischord kids worked at some time at Y&T in Rockville. They had a separate store of singles stocked from floor to ceiling that was rarely open or open by request only, and between the bad attitude of the employees and customers I rarely asked. The Public are assholes so I don’t blame Skip for not always being in the greatest mood. There must have been an endless parade of assholes that came into his shop.
Ian was nice to me the one time I saw him there. He recommended a band called The Confederate. Guy from Fugazi worked there and seemed quite pissed to be there.
Bands south of The Beltway had a similar approach. The Ugly Americans, The Inbred, The Confederate – they all had something in common that’s dated and specific to that area.

We can’t bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell them stories that don’t go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe. So, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter’, you’d say. Now, where were we? Oh, yeah…the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war; the only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.
Man, that sounds so cool! Tell me more…I will skip work tomorrow. Tell me again about how the cool thing was an “onion belt”…
So where’s Lake & Palmer now?
I would like to set the record straight.I was the guitar player for Th’Inbred and the lyric in Scene Death is indeed IN CROWD not “Ian” crowd. Bob ( also known as Art Reco), the vocalist for the Inbred, would often greatly exaggerate a redneck accent for effect. There really is no more to it than that. But WOW some of the theories are fun!

Back in ’90 I traded the 1st Varukers lp for this and the 1st lp, there’s a deal!! Billy Atwell did indeed play on the Pigs tour when Kenny Craun was taken ill and a stellar job he did too. Check out the I’m Not Crazy I’m An Aeroplane lp and more importantly their John Peel Session form ’87 which still has not seen the light of day, classic stuff.
The band’s complete discography (including 3 unreleased studio songs) has finally been reissued officially on Alternative Tentacles on CD & on 2 limited edition color vinyl LPs
