In my years with Swedens Raped Teenagers Bill Stevenson(together with Neil Peart of Rush) was the biggest influence on my drumming and to this day still is. I think no other punk drummer has kept his playing so fresh and inventive as Bill has. And the old man is still going and play as great as ever as he showed on Descendents latest master piece Cool To Be You. Get it!
Well here we have The Descendents highly acclaimed(well not really) debut. Sounding not at all like they would do just one year later. A lot more amateurish and plain punk without a trace of hardcore. I’ve learned to love this 7″ over the years. At first I hated it when hearing the songs on the Bonus Fat 12″. Nowadays I hold this very dear. Both tracks really rocks in my world. Â

Bill is my fave drummer as well Peter. I’ve never seen him with Descendents but I saw him with Black Flag in ’84. He rules ass! Typ.
This 7″ isn’t, and have never been, my cup of tea. Bought it at Rough Trade in ´81 for £1 and sold it 10 years ago for 700 SEK so it was a great investment though. Thank god for Milo som fick ordning pÃ¥ det här sketbandet! ;o)
Yeah I saw Bill with Black Flag in Jonkoping in 1984 too. Did an interview with Rollins at the same time that made me scared as hell of him. Then I saw ALL in UK in 1989. Bad sound which ruined it ALL. Ha ha ha. In 1997 I played bass with a band that opened up for Descendents in Linkoping. Before the show I heard rumors that Bill and Stephen got hooked on The Flakes after hearing some of our records at a record store. I asked Bill if he wanted to produce us and he replied he would love to. Yeah I can die happy now.
I prefer their latter material…this is decent.
Awesome! Does Stevenson sing on this??
Never could get into this one and still can’t. This 7″ was regarded as one of the rarest and hardest to find U.S. 7″s among those who I traded with back then. Weird, innit.
I was at that show in Linköping Peter, remember?
Anyway, I think this is a great record and I think more people would like it if it was some other band then Descendents, as we all know the great stuff that came later on…
Great record!
I love Ride the Wild because it sounds so different from the rest of their stuff.
Awesome surfy punk/wave !!! Stevenson is still God !!!!!
This sounds like it could have come from anywhere. It’s a hectic world reminds me of a few New Zealand bands who were around at the same time. Today was the first time I’d heard it. Thanks.
I dug this one and The Bodysnatchers (Are You Into Destruction?) out of a giant pile of crap at some total burnout’s record store and don’t recall liking either one of them. I think they were 50 cents or maybe a dollar. I suppose it’s grown on me a little by now but I just don’t know…..Maybe one more chance since it gets the Peter thumbs up.
If you try not to compare this to their later stuff it’s a great record! No Martin can’t remember you. But you remember me so I guess I was more drunk then you ;).
Yeh Chris, Its a Hectic World, sounds very much like the Scavengers/Marching Girls out of New Zealand 1977 to 80.Like this more after repeated listens thanks, and keep em coming
I love this. Always have and always will, later descendents sucked
Cheers for posting this!
best descendents record, i’m not really a fan of their other stuff, just the Fat 7″
