Long time since I posted a real hard to get obscurity. Hard to get and obscurity doesn’t equal quality. This time it does. I Don’t Need You has been described as a cross between The Maids and Mentally Ill and I agree. Even Destry Hampton comes to mind. Pasteborad drums and thin distorted guitar that has come to be know as the “mosquito sound”. Also take note of the killer rubber band sound the bass player cranks out!! Dogs is a great track too but got a totally 60’s psych sound so punkers beware. I’ve googled and yahooed my ass off to try to find anything about them but all I find is the inclusion on collectors want list and the appearance on KBD #12.
Here I offer the lyrics to I Don’t Nee You(Cause I Got Me):
You say you don’t need me anymore
That’s ok, because I’ve been bored
Let me tell you our reality
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got – me
oh, me.
Was I supposed to break down and cry?
Was a tear to come to my eye?
Well I’ll tell you that I feel free
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got – me
oh, me.
I can’t help thinking ’bout what a lucky guy I am!
I start thinking it’s true
But now I don’t have to put up with you
Now I don’t have to put up with – you
oh, you.
Now I’ll say it; I’m glad your gone
You’ve been around here much too long
I won’t miss you
Now you’ll see
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got – me
oh, me.
I can’t help thinking ’bout what a lucky guy I am!
I start thinking it’s true
But now I don’t have to put up with you
Now I don’t have to put up with – you
oh, you.
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got me
I don’t need you ’cause I got — me
oh, me.
well me!
yea me!

I don’t need you sounds a lot like Black Sabbath to me. It’s a total killer and I wish BS sounded more like this. Thanks a lot.
Dogs is kind of cheesy, but as I love organs I think it’s a great song just as well.
I love both songs and especially the distorted, aggressive sound. A total winner and just what one’d expect from the KBD blog.
I was smitten with “I Don’t Need You” when I first heard it many years ago- what a great guitar buzz. These Nubs were from the state of New Hampshire (GG Allin’s home state), as opposed to the other Nubs (who did the awesome “Job” 7″ and were from just outside San Francisco). In 1996 the New Hampshire Nubs released the “Gnu Music” 11-song CD- I have a dub of it on a casette tape. It was recorded circa 1980 but it’s NOT that good- “I Don’t Need You” is NOT on the CD, “Dogs” is, but the rest of the songs kinda falls flat if I remember right (I haven’t listened to it in years). Nothing on it comes even remotely close to the quality of “I Don’t Need You”. A Google search shows that someone just sold a copy of the CD on eBay recently:
http://cgi.ebay.com.my/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380137108598
I just listed a 45 from GG Allin and another from the Nubs on Ebay. Also listed Jonee Earhtquake
Interestingly enough, I had nothing to do with Gnu Music. My stuff was omitted…long story, ego shit, etc…
Thanks very much for the kind words on the tune. It’s fun to find out that this is still floating around out there.
Phil Boynton
YES!!! More punk from my homeland, New Hampshire! The voice even sounds a bit like GG, I think.
I had a known collector of New England punk rock put this on cassette for me, along with The Objects live ’78 12″ (Vermont punk with one of the Queers guys). But he warned me that his cassette deck was running off speed, so it’s great to get another rip of this. Thanks!
A side great, B side sucks major ass…
Going to have to agree with Jay 100% on that statement. If anything, posting the B-side will drive the price of the thing down…..
Hahaha! Hopefully it will bring the price down as I want a copy of this one.
Kind of agree with Jay on this. The A side is such a good tune, was already thinking of songs to go with it on a mixed CD. Was okay with the B side, even though it sounded like a totally a different band, until about 1 minute in, then it self destructed. Got to thank you Peter for that A side, best new to me song I’ve heard all month.
Both tracks shreds! Thank me.
Thank you!!!
Thank you for thanking me!

Thank you. I wrote this 34 years ago. I appreciate you guys enjoying it. – Phil Boynton
Can’t get “I Don’t Need You” outta my head and then I torture myself by putting it on my computer at work to listen to it even more. What is it about taste that makes us hold on to some songs so strongly and then push other songs away?
I think it is because, some songs suck and others are pure genius…hahaha
Man, I always thought this was the same Nubs as “Job”. Well, you learn something everyday! “Don’t Need You” is a killer track. Thanks for posting.
Wait…..Are there two Nubs bands?
Job is a song by Nubs…..Don’t Need You is a song by Nubs…and Dogs is a song by Nubs…..but are they all the same band or am I missing something here?
I was just introduced to this band about 2 weeks ago in San Francisco.
Any information, such as where I can get all these songs (fuck off iTunes)
and band info would be much appreciated.
Hi Cynthia!
There’s two different Nubs. Here’s the other Nubs:
https://kbdrecords.com/2006/09/03/nubs-job-7/
The Nubs are from New Hampshire — Lead singer is BJ Branch . . . They are awesome.
I think that some of you guys have got this band all wrong. As someone who followed them up to their breakup, ( A sad day for the music world), I can tell you that these guys can’t be pidgeonholed as strictly a punk band. These guys rocked!!
They have to be one of the most creative and talented bands to ever come out of the northeast. These guys used to play shows at the legendary Rat, Cantones, The Underground, and other clubs in Boston, and blow the doors off of other bands who were headlining. Got to the point where bands would try to book a different date if they knew the Nubs were opening. Why the management wouldn’t give them a headliner is beyond me. If you’re looking for pure punk, you’ll find that the Nubs did that, but always wanted to show that they could do a lot more.
FYI, Dogs, that suck-ass B side got a fair amount of interest from several major record labels, and this single was the #1 requested on the BBC for three weeks straight… Maybe they were doing something right?
I have to ask you to identify yourself to me. You have our history down really well. We had a blast and we never thought anyone gave a shit.

just outting it out there, the drummer of this band is my grandfather xD. Awesome music, but it is impossible to find it ANYWHERE. My uncle is the only person left that i know that still has “Gnu music”.
“Gnu Music” is that another 7inch?
no its their cd album, it has either 9 or 11 tracks.
here is a link to it…

Hey, I have a copy of this 45 (dogs and I don’t need you) from when they played at UNH in 1980 or ’81. Is it worth anything? email me if you are interested. jonfeins@comcast.net

Ebay: US $242.00 – Well, looks like some people really WILL pay for punk records, that’s insane! I love both A and B sides, and would pay a decent amount for it. If anyone ever wants to get rid of their copy don’t hesitate to email me.. Haha! -TG
Could someone list it on Discogs.com? (I don’t have an account)
I think that this rager/weirdo punk genius will be/has been reissued recently. “I Don’t Need You” – the greatest break-up song ever??
I’ve been trying to get a hold of the CD “Gnu Music” forever now but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Can someone help me out? reuter13@gmx.de
Thank you very much!
I haven’t looked for any Nub references in a few years. It’s fun to see you guys liked what we did. We had a freakin’ blast making the music that we did. If anyone is ever interested in knowing more about The Nubs, look me up……Phil Boynton, Bass Guitar and Vocals, The Nubs
P.S. Re: Those that know the drummer…tell Lenny I said hi.
Hi Phil!!!
It’s been a long time since I used to sing for the Nubs in my feetie pajammas, although, I think BJ probably didn’t know how to say no to a very eager 3 year old.
Well, I’m having a my partner remaster and digitize as may songs as we can round up. I missed hearing many songs that didn’t make it on the re-release CD Gnu Music.
Hoping all is well,
-Jamie
Well Jamie you most certainly Have my attention. Given the many years I am drawing a blank on who you are of course. Would love to hear more about your connection to us. Would also love to hear more about gathering those songs together again. I lost a lot of tapes over the years and little beyond the cd and some practice tapes. Love to hear more. Funny to hear from a mysterious blast from the past a few days after we lose Bowie our biggest influence. RIP Bowie
Jaime would your “maiden name” be Hooper per chance?
Are you related to Boyd Boynton per chance?
What a great surprise finding this link. It has been a very long time but I can still remember the awesome show at the UNH Mub Pub. BJ lived a couple of doors down from me in Williamson Hall. Unfortunately I lost my 45 and cassettes over the years but this was awesome to hear you guys again. Brought back a great memory.
Thanks and hope all are well.
