Bestest band in the world – but this sounds kinda lame …..
huh???
so sure!
Saw them a few months back…still incredible! Maybe the Def Leppard concert won’t be as “lame”, Erich?? Hahahahahaha…
I saw them a few months back it was fucking awesome. They did a whole tribute to indiana bands and covered can’t stand the midwest and some other greats… no gizmos though.
Saw their first show in LA at the time of the 1st lp release. On the same bill were other 1st time LA visitors Minor Threat & M.D.C. plus LA band the Detonators. Mahern rambled something about Manson and then they just blasted everyone else off the stage!
I don’t recall MDC playing that gig?? I thought DK headlined that one?? I left after Minor Threat…what a wonderful gig it was. Was the place called “the Barn?” My memory eludes me. I do know that the Zero Boys were incredible that night.
C’mon – the singer lost his voice, the speed has slowed down and IT’S 2009. IT’S OVER. Something fresh and new turned into nostalgia. Let it die, please, let it die. No reason to entertain the kids of today with music of yesterday.
Yes…no more Fear of God!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree…
I don´t agree with you. Sometimes you need to spread your opinions around us even we know well that you don´t have a truth, Erich.
C´mon, Paul still got the voice only a bit darker and the speed is the same if not a bit faster. I´m not talking opinions here I´m talking facts.
Facts. Haha, okay. Fact is: It’s lamer and Paul lost his voice. I saw Judas Priest live in 2004 or 2005 or so, first time after 20 years. There these old buddies of mine at the show. It was horrible: The band sucked, Halford sounded like a sick coyote and looked like a joke, not even a shadow of he used to be. After the gig, I asked the other elderly statesmen of the scene what they thought of it: They said about the same as you, Peter.
Let it die, I beg you: LET IT DIE. It’s over. It was the best thing in our lifes maybe, but it’s dead and gone and this is exactly what it sounds like.
The only difference is that I´m right and the Judas jocks are wrong. Metal was never fresh. It should´ve died in the end of the 70s :D.
Metal is like Disneyland – and I know that :-)
but to let it DIE would mean we’d have to abandon yours and Peter’s killer blogs!
vaffan, nostalgiprogpirog
Vafalls?
Eh, skippa nollorna och satt pa Disclose moahahhahahahahah
This band should’ve broke up right after their first record “Livin’ in the 80’s”.
HA HA HA funny :D. Hope you stop commenting after that comment.
Hahahahaha.
Erich, you really are a moany old bastard! :) We all know that you think hardcore is dead &, sure, this is rather on the nostalgic side, but people are having fun! Hardcore may be over for you, but not for me & many more people. I am really looking forward to seeing Social Circkle play in Glasgow in 2 weeks, a great hardcore band from Boston. Who cares if it’s all been done before if it’s done with energy & commitment.
fkn right man
now here’s a performance i can get behind!
How is music from 20-30 years ago worn out? Baroque music was popular for 160 years. This contemporary notion than an idea is irrelevant so quickly (for so many people these days, in less than a decade) is absurd. That there is always “new” stuff coming along is great, but so are familiar ideas. It’s a balance. And just what’s so “new” about a lot of new music anyway? Punk is rock and rock is just people riffing on Elvis riffing on blues at various different speeds — so who cares if it’s from 1959, 1984, or 2009 so long as it’s good?
Well said.
You guys are really simple minded, haha. “Who cares as long as it’s good”. Sounds like a fucking moron meeting.
And that comes from someone who just went to a Freeze show! People shouldn’t pay much attention to Erich’s opinion. He’s constantly contradicting himself and he’s nothing but a judgemental boy scout. That guy should stay where he belongs, at an Iron Maiden show.
PS: Zero Boy’s song “Living in the 80s” illustrates this perfectly. A statement of “I live NOW, I don’t live in the past” is now pathetic, dull, lame ass nostalgia.
PS: Yeah, Punk is people ripping off Elvis and Baroque was popular for 160 years. Genius at work!
Erich, you are a very good writer when it comes to music, but you are a condescending/arrogant cunt sometimes. “Simple minded?” You have raved about the latest doom metal release on your own website, so what’s the difference between a current doom metal or hardcore release? Both forms of music have been going for years, yet only the hardcore stuff is old hat? Double standards. You seem to be the one who’s wrapped up in nostalgia while many of us are enjoying current hardcore bands. You have become the old fart that you railed against when you were younger. For someone who has no interest in the current hardcore scene, maybe you shouldn’t comment on something you have no real knowledge of. Fair enough?
Hardcore and Punk were social movements to a good part – it was aggressive, militant, it was a big experiment with an open outcome. It’s pathetic nostalgia, retro garbage since more than 20 years now. Have you never felt completely embarrassed and utterly sad at these retro shows, when a bunch of fat old men stand around in a virtual land of the lost? If you’re simple minded enough to just be there and forget about time, well, I pity you. There are o “current Hardcore bands” like there is no current Middle Ages or current Blue Grass or current NWOBHM. It’s retro garbage, made out by cultural systems that are wrapped up in nostalgia cause we all seem stuck in a bizarre situation when everything seems to be invented already. And that’s where I’m not an old fart: I stick to the music of my youth because nothing else gives me as much power, enjoyment, aggression – but it all comes from the past and only works when I activate it personally. As a cultural phenomenon, it’s as dead as Metal or Classical Music. It’s become a pitiful and unaesthetic re-enactment that makes one want to puke, really. Nothing against the Zero Boys – great band, one of the greatest I can think of, but even in 1987 when I saw them live, it felt “old” and cuddly. And as a Hardcore-guy or Punk-Metalist, I don’t want to feel comfortable in a social group of sorts. That’s all hippie dreck. It must be destroyed – no, it IS destroyed. It’s just another dead fad that since a few years drips into the mainstream cultural scenes and will soon be found in an even more polished and watered form in an even wider retro-wave. Take my word.
Does this sermon also apply to hard rock bands like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Slayer and Motorhead…who also tour and plays the same songs over and over again for years? These bands are playing their “hits” and barely anything other songs and people keep going to their shows. If people are enjoying these shows, who are you to say it’s wrong? And no you’re not hardcore guy or a punk metallist (haha, sounds so cheesy!), you’re a judgemental and histrionic loudmouth.
Of course it applies to them as well, my conservative little shithead.
Erich, I have to say that I really like the way you talk for your point of view and I don’t have a problem with what you say in general, but saying that punk and HC is dead and not relevant anymore is a bit to much in my opinion.
If so, new bands wouldn’t be relevant for anyone, not even the kids (which I know you like to call me as well from time to time;)) who just discovered the genre.
So what if lots of bands today sounds like bands did in the late 70s/ early 80s? When I first got into punk and hardcore as a 12 year old kid, the music really to me and I couldn’t care less about the fact that the bands I liked were dead and gone, the music and lyrics was still as important to me. I really liked the boy-scout bands of 88 who were around at that time, as well as the first generation of bands. The only thing I didn’t like about the early bands was that it was so hard to find the records that I heard about and that older friends played for me (and it hasn’t been easier since then).
I know I sing in a somewhat nostalgic band, but to me it’s more or less just a fun way of doing something I like in my spare time, and as was still a baby when the first wave of bands were around it’s hard for me to be nostalgic for times I can’t even remember, isn’t it?
It’s just to us (and with saying that I have to include myself to the older crowd despite calling me younger previously as I think 20+ years as a punk fan is enough to include myself to that crowd, for good or worse) that the music seems like nostalgia and it’s all been done before. C’mon, bands are, and hava always been inspired by previous bands, but to them it’s still something new and fresh, no matter what anyone else thinks. Personally I’m kind of fascinated with new bands that sounds exactly like old bands as technology has moved forward so much since then that I assume it must be pretty hard to get a sound that sounds like it was done in 78, 82 or whatever, but then I suck at things has anything to do with recordings etc. so I might be horribly wrong.
And to add some last words about this clip that caused this nice conversation; I watched about 1 minute of it, and that was enough for me. I found it a bit boring, but then I’m not the biggest Zero Boys fan either, so it might be because of that, but in general I think most bands that reunite are pretty boring. I’ve seen quite a few reunion shows and sometimes they’re really good, and sometimes they bore me out. I think the boring part usually comes from that I have a picture in my head of what it would be like, but at the shows I just see a bunch of older people on stage looking old. On the other hand I don’t mind seeing new bands with old geezers playing new material as well as throwing in some older songs for good measure, and it’s most likely fun for them to play older stuff as well as the audience usually likes it.
SO, just to make this even longer, and to try to sum it up for those of you who don’t have the patience to read all my bullshit;
New bands sounding like old bands, perfectly fine as the music is still relevant.
Old bands reuniting and playing older crowd pleasers, not too much fun.
OK, I decieded to see the entire clip, and I changed my mind a bit about it. maybe it’s not great, but at least it’s hilarious. Check out the longhaired guy who shows up at 1.18 and tries to stage dive and can’t get over the monitor! Then a few seconds later he’s at it again and fails. When he finally manage to get over it he falls flat to his back! Painfully entertaining as I’ve done the same thing a few times.
I don’t think we are ever gonna change each other’s mind on this matter, so there’s no point in really continuing this to-&-fro. I agree that the “reformed bands” thing is a bit cringeworthy, but I’m not really concerned about these bands. Although when I saw Mission Of Burma a few years back I was totally blown away by the fact that their new stuff was up there with their earlier material & they seemed to be on stage enjoying themselves rather than going through the motions. Nostalgia is OK if you take it at face value & don’t expect anything revelatory. The thing that gets me though, is the fact that you accuse people of wallowing in nostalgia, yet you constantly hark back to your youth in a musical sense. I’d consider that nostalgic. I can picture you hearing a current hardcore band, shaking your head saying: “This has all been done before & in a much better way when I was younger!” Kids are getting into hardcore now & they are more concerned with current bands rather than the classics from the early/mid ’80’s, so to them hardcore is relevant. I don’t see what the big problem is.
What the problem is? What would have happened if we all had Beatles or Rolling Stones cover bands 20-30 years ago?
But we didn’t all have Beatles or Rolling Stones cover bands 20-30 years ago, so your arguement has no point. Hardcore bands today may be regurgitating the bands of the past to an extent, but some of them are putting their own stamp on the music, too. Surely you must conceed that point? There were rotten hardcore bands in the 80’s, too, as you know. To you hardcore is dead, but to others it’s in rude health. It’s all very subjective, music, isn’t it?

please. let it die.
You bastards! You killed Punk!
I am a geezer punk. I am old as dirt. I really don’t get a thrill out of seeing reunion gigs, ’cause it reminds me of that fact. My band still does them (although i quit doing them years ago) and they have filled youtube up with geezer videos. People tend to think that this is what the band looks and sounds like. There is no comparison to what they looked and sounded like in late 70’s, early 80’s. The recorded music is still relevant or we wouldn’t be on this site, but if these geezers were trying to do something new, other that being a tribute band to themselves, they would get my respect. That ZB video was shot at Alley Katz in Richmond, VA. Most of the kids in the mosh pit are in 80’s styled hardcore bands currently. HUGE scene here (RVA) and I don’t think anyone there would listen to you if you said hardcore is dead. Reunions, let it die. Hardcore, keep it coming, kiddies.
This is kinda like meeting an ex girfriend in the supermarket 20 years after you dated her, the memory will be soiled forever ..
Fat chicks shouldn’t be aloud to stage dive.
did that fat chick ever make it up off the floor? D’oh!
She did one jump. if she made it up on her feet again I don’t know.
Fatties are the punks of today!
The fatties are the fat of today.
Hi!
This week I’ve just to start a new blog to share my ripped vynils. I think you could enjoy some of them.
Cheers!

hey erich,
Come to Richmond Virginia when Negative Approach is playing here with Wasted Time and tell all of us that hardcore is fucking dead.
Hahaha, okay. Start collecting money for the flight or ask your daddy.
Seems to me this argument is a vicious circle (pun intended, lame, I know). You got an old fart who’s stuck in the past and the music of today is strange and scares him (well maybe more like is boring and pisses him off), and you got the kids getting their panties in a bunch when someone puts down something they’re into. The music is there if you like it, great if not well that’s fine too. I’ll admit the video was a bit lack luster (except for the long haired guy trying to stage dive, that was funny) but when I went to see the Zero Boys, I dug it. I had fun, and Mahern sounded more like his youthful self than the video above. You know what the problem is? We’re all music snobs, Erich being the biggest one of all. Nothing wrong with the eh?
that* (dang, messed up at the end)
I’ll admit that Richmond is full preppy rich college kids trying to recreate the past. Musically, it’s ok but the rest will never be theere! Richmond clean american kid into record collecting and pretending to be punk hardcore is hilarious.
actually the original dc hardcore kids were rich, living in georgetown and they were trying to recreate ’77 uk punk’s look and sound. what’s wrong with that? richmond hardcore scene is real to those in it and that’s all that counts. punk is all about making music you like for friends and hanging out. if you get enough friends, it’s a scene. richmond currently has a great hardcore scene. i don’t see any pretension, just a huge group of friends having fun. what is “the rest” that i am missing from your post? if 80’s hardcore changed the world or something, i must have missed it.
Very well said, Dan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ZERO BOYS IN CLEVELAND ON HALLOWEEN!!!!
It’ll be great!!! I wish I could go…
When bands break up & get back together years later are they nothing more than a cover band? Terry is dead. Why do a reunion?
Honestly, outside of the speed what makes this any different than some 80’s band playing the county fair?
Punk or not. HC or not. Show some integrity, no reunions ever.
Don’t do it for the “kids” the “fans”..whatever. Let it go. Who REALLY needs/wants to see a middle aged man shakes his ass.
Sad.
whaaat, its total news to me that TERRY HOWE is dead -RIP!
When (why) did that happen (ZZZ) ?!
