V/A – Mixed Nuts Don’t Crack L.P. 12″

Maybe one of the rarest and even one of the best USHC compilations from 1982 starts off with Media Disease that sounds like your typical DCHC band ala a mix of Teen Idles, Minor Threat etc and of course it’s great! They could’ve just been a band on Flex Your Head. Next is Chalk Circle that steps on post punk ground and Subversive Pleasure is fantastic. A bit like The Slits. Finishing it off on side A is Social Suicide that rips through four tracks of such a high quality  it’s a mystery that they never released anything else then this. I know that could be said about many USHC bands popping in and out on various comps. during the time. S.V.D.B. comes to mind as one of them. Side 2 and here’s United Mutation which was the main reason why I wanted Mixed Nuts… in the first place. They’re just as crazy and great as ever. They don’t top their debut but thinking they sounded like this in 1982 is just mind blowing. Chaotic, evil and insane. Awesome. Nuclear Crayons, just like Subversive Pleasure, breaks the HC mold with something completely different. That’s what I love with those early us punk/hc compilations. I enjoy three out four tracks by ’em. Last band out, Hate From Ignorance is the only band on here that do nothing for me. Mixed nuts don’t crack! Indeed.

Absolutely brilliant you posting this! I used to own this album but sold it long ago. I was just recently thinking about if and when someone would upload it. Always favored the amazing United Mutation and Nuclear Crayons tracks but the whole thing smokes.

  6. Jay Thurston says:

I owned this..thanks for the reminder as to why I sold it.

  7. The Flakes // Drummer says:

You didn’t give it away the same day Jay?

    • Jay Thurston says:

Yes, I did that a lot back then. I would buy a record and if I didn’t like it, I would sell it and get something else.

  8. Erich says:

Haha, Jay …. Killer comp, I like it alot. The thick sleeve rules too.

  9. bomgoll says:

Cool beans, indeed! Would it be too much to ask to bundle these larger compilations together in a .rar?

  10. The Flakes // Drummer says:

bomgoll, that would really be too much to ask considering all the job from my side you lazy bastard can do yours ;). another thing is that this site works as a podcast too and .rar would ruin it.

  11. The Flakes // Drummer says:

You give a pearl like this away and in the next second you become a fan of Doggy Style on Facebook ha ha :D. Irony?

  12. Mmmatze says:

Oh yes, please, but not in a .rar, they are a pain in the buttocks for Mac users. Why not zip ’em? Thanks for the awesomeness!

  13. The Flakes // Drummer says:

Mmmatze, maybe you didn’t read my comment? .rar is no problem for Mac users. I’m a Mac man.

  19. eric says:

I regret not buying this comp when it was easy to find around the DC area. United Mutation were an amazing live band.

  20. Johan says:

    Unwritten Laws!!!

  21. brian crime says:

Any chance any of these tracks will be re-published in vinyl on one of your beautiful KBD RECORDS COMPILATIONS … ? Does KBD still produce vinyl compilations? I think the answer is yes … If so, please consider putting foul appetite by social suicide on a vinyl comp because, not to be overly tacky, but that song kicks serious ass.

    • The Flakes // Drummer says:

Sorry Brian I have nothing to do with the Killed By Death bootleg series. That was another sweet swede named Johan Kugelberg who compiled up to number 5 I think? Then there’ve been several others done by various people whom I don’t know.

So I guess you have to settle with the mp3s since that’s the only way I operate.

    • Joey A. says:

Thanks Brian. It was a long time ago but we had great fun playing together. I wrote Foul Appetite in an attic bedroom in a punk house shared with other members of Social Suicide. Great years to be alive and young back then.

  22. brian crime says:

the mp3s are awesome — i heart this site! thanks so much!

  23. Nathan G says:

For those interested – Chalk Circle have a 12″ vinyl available on the Mississippi label….
