Rondos / Railbirds – Split E.P. 7″

Time for a smasher that’s been in the waiting room for way too long; the debut from both Rondos and The Railbirds. With a sleeve like this you can’t expect too little, right? And both bands deliver way above your average Dutch punk band. And that indicates a very high standard for sure as that country was boiling with great bands in the early punk years.
Rondos starts out with the a cute titled song; King Kong’s Penis and it’s a lo-fi master piece, just like the title tells you. Next up is one(/two) of my favourite songs of all time, Wanna Go Home/ Gigolo. Two songs put together in sweet harmony! They end with the frightening Russians Are Coming that sounds like it could’ve been recorded in southern Sweden. Why? Impossible for me to explain.

Flip the record over and you have the magnificent and high energy Railbirds who are bordering into hardcore territory on Lonely, just because they can! I think I’m in love with their drummer by the way. The intro to I’m So Proud grabs my attention everytime, even if the song is a bit too standard r n’ r for my taste in general. Lockheed might sound a bit too slow, but the gritty guitar sound and the pissed of sneering makes up for the loss of speed.

One of the coolest sleeves ever, and the lyrics are written with a beautiful touch from someone with a talent for hand writing.

Okay, I admit I didn’t listen to every song, but I’m still going to nominate “I’m So Proud” as the winner here. What an awesome, shuffling paean to erection.

Fantastic! rough & rowdy the way i like it. the singer from Rondos sounds like Dick from (UK) Subhumans. any other stuff from either of these bands? thx for sharing…

Rondos did an LP and an ep in 1980 as well as contributed to a few comps, where the untitled double 7″ on King Kong records from 79 deserves a future post as it’s really good. Railbirds are on that comp as well with songs that kick even more ass than the ones they have on this split

      Glad you guys liked it!

  3. The Flakes // Bummer says:

Russians are cuming and Lonely are absolutely amazing.

The Rondos from Rotterdam(ned) did an album in 1980, which is in a positive way heavily influenced by Crass on one hand and on the other by Gang of Four.
You can read the whole interesting story of the band here:
Very D.I.Y. – booking their own shows, putting out their own records, putting out their own fanzine, running their own squat and so on and on and on.
They call it a day in 1980 when they thought, that (for them!) the whole Punk thing was running out of steam and went downhill in a sort of a mindless conformist fashion parade for those, who were into destructive drugs and (self-)destructive violence.
They were looking for something more different!
Apart from their (well, for me…) strange political left attitudes the Rondos were, as far as I know, one of the first Punk bands, who did anti-drugs lyrics in”We don’t need no speed” and “I don’t like the Rastaman” from their album – Straight Edge in 1980?

Truly filthy indeed. Could be the filthiest record ever made. Maybe.

  6. Chano says:

    Finally…. ;-) Ok, here’s my thoughts:
The Rondos: strong (and i mean STRONG!) 60’s Garage-Punk influence. They remind me of the first 7″ by Modern Warfare or The Feederz ’79’s demo. My preference goes to “King Kong’s Penis” because of the raw sound, total 60’s chorus and demented title, but the other songs are pretty cool, too.
Railbirds: “Lonely” is the best song on this split. Period. Unfortunately the other two sounds quite boring to my ears…. “Lonely” is a freakin’ hit, though!
The cover pic is just awesome. :-) Thanks for sharing!

Mkay, Chano had his say so we can do the next post now Peter.

      • Chano says:

Well, it shouldn’t be like that…. By the way i meant “finally” because i was waiting for this to be posted since awhile… :-)

        • Martin says:

Well, I did mean it in a positive way as you’ve been commenting on every single post for quite some time now, so it was more like “Chano’s been here, we can post another one for him now;)”.

We talked about this one a year ago or so, right Chano?

          • Chano says:

Oh, sorry Martin. I kinda took it the wrong way…. D’OH!!! :-D Yep! It was about 1 year ago when you talked about posting this 7″, but you were still busy with the “world tour”, so it got shelved. It’s a good one and the cover pic is classick!! :-)

  7. efka says:

That is so magical and awesome. I just have a chance to enjoy fantastic kbd stuff;)) thx!

  8. Chano says:

Some bonus stuff from Railbirds: enjoy!! ;-)

  9. Brian says:

Any chance of posting the 4 way split w/Bunker, Terminal City and Railbirds? Thanks.
